What is the difference between Entry Developer vs Junior Developer?

AspectEntry DeveloperJunior Developer
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or associate degree, basic coding skillsSimilar credentials, often with some coding coursework or certifications
Work EnvironmentEntry-level positions in tech companies, startups, or internshipsJunior roles in software teams, often under supervision
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in tech industries, entry-level job listingsWidely used in software development companies, tech sectors

Entry Developer and Junior Developer roles are similar, both requiring basic coding skills and entry-level credentials. The terms are often used interchangeably, with slight variations depending on the company. Both positions serve as stepping stones into software development careers, offering opportunities to gain practical experience and grow into more advanced roles.

What is L1, L2, L3, and L4 developer?

In the context of entry-level developer roles, L1, L2, L3, and L4 typically refer to different levels of experience and responsibility, with L1 being the most junior and L4 more senior. These levels often indicate increasing technical skills, problem-solving ability, and independence, and are used by organizations to structure career progression and assign appropriate tasks. As an entry developer, understanding these levels can help clarify expectations and growth opportunities within a company.

What are entry developers?

Entry developers, sometimes called junior developers, are professionals who are at the beginning of their software development careers. They typically have basic programming skills and work under the guidance of more experienced developers to build, test, and maintain software applications. Entry developers often focus on learning new technologies, writing simple code, fixing bugs, and gradually taking on more complex tasks as they gain experience. Their role is essential for gaining practical knowledge and growing into more advanced development positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Developer, you need foundational programming skills, understanding of software development principles, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages such as Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as version control systems like Git, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and willingness to learn new technologies set successful candidates apart. These skills are crucial for delivering reliable code, collaborating effectively with teams, and adapting to evolving project requirements.

What types of projects and tasks can an Entry Developer typically expect to work on in their first year?

As an Entry Developer, you’ll often start by handling smaller, well-defined tasks such as fixing bugs, writing unit tests, or implementing simple features under the guidance of more experienced developers. You’ll likely participate in code reviews, attend daily stand-up meetings, and collaborate closely with team members to learn best practices and company coding standards. Over time, as you gain confidence and show proficiency, you may be given more complex assignments and opportunities to contribute to larger projects, setting a strong foundation for career growth.

Will AI replace developers in 2026?

Entry developers will continue to play a vital role in software development, as AI tools are designed to assist rather than fully replace human programmers. While AI can automate routine coding tasks, skills such as problem-solving, system design, and understanding user needs remain essential for developers in 2026 and beyond.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Senior software engineers, especially those in specialized fields like machine learning, AI, or working at major tech companies, can earn $500,000 or more annually through base salary, bonuses, and stock options. High compensation often requires extensive experience, advanced skills, and working in competitive or executive-level roles within the tech industry.

How do I get a programming job with no experience?

Entry developer roles often require some programming knowledge, so gaining skills through online courses, coding bootcamps, or personal projects can help demonstrate your abilities. Building a portfolio, contributing to open-source projects, and learning relevant tools like Git and common programming languages can improve your chances, even without formal work experience.

Job description

#WeAreParamount on a mission to unleash the power of content... you in?
We've got the brands, we've got the stars, we've got the power to achieve our mission to entertain the planet - now all we're missing is... YOU! Becoming a part of Paramount means joining a team of passionate people who not only recognize the power of content but also enjoy a touch of fun and uniqueness. Together, we co-create moments that matter - both for our audiences and our employees - and aim to leave a positive mark on culture.

Overview
As a member of the Applied Machine Learning Group, you'll help build a world-class streaming experience within the team. Your mission is to get the user watching. You own the "onboarding" and "re-entry" experience, including high-commitment surfaces like Your Next Watch (YNW), Jump Back In (JBI), and While You Were Away (WYWA).
You'll put customers first by using MLFlow for experiment tracking, Qdrant for retrieval, and Post-training RL to ensure that the content we surface at the start of a session is what the user is most likely to commit to. You will be in charge of implementing the components that solve the "Cold Start" problem for new users and provide seamless re-entry for returning ones. You'll work in an IC2 (Mid-level) role to ensure these surfaces, which optimize for Start Rate under uncertainty, identify if a user stays or leaves within the first 30 seconds of app launch.

Responsibilities
  • Independent Delivery: Own the implementation of features for JBI (Jump Back In) and YNW (Your Next Watch).
  • Retrieval Optimization: Use Qdrant to find high-relevance candidates for re-entry carousels based on session history and global trends.
  • Experiment Lifecycle: Use MLFlow to manage, track, and deploy experiments, ensuring a high bar for reproducibility.
  • Model Training: Develop and serve models in GCP using TensorFlow/PyTorch, incorporating Post-training RL for reward-based optimization.
  • Collaborative Quality: Participate in design reviews to ensure your components share the same high-reliability standards as the rest of the pod.
  • Solving Cold Start: Build the logic that makes the app feel personalized even for users we know very little about.
  • High-Commitment Accuracy: Optimize for the "Play" button-the ultimate signal of user commitment.
Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years in MLE.
  • Experience with GCP and MLFlow.
  • Proficiency in TensorFlow/PyTorch.
  • Knowledge with Vector DBs.
  • Proven ability to implement features that solve the "Cold Start" problem for new users.
  • Experience managing, tracking, and deploying experiments to ensure a high bar for reproducibility.
Bonus Skills
  • Background in multi-stage ranking or "Cold Start" problems.
  • Experience with retrieval optimization and re-entry carousels.
  • Knowledge with Post-training RL for reward-based optimization.
