Amerco Real Estate Company is seeking a full-time Senior Planner professional to support land use, zoning, and entitlement planning activities for our commercial real estate portfolio throughout the U.S. and Canada. In this role, you will provide expertise in land planning, municipal entitlement processes, graphic preparation, and site plan development from project due diligence through final approval. The Senior Planner and Zoning professional will provide strategic guidance on zoning regulations, land use planning, and entitlement strategies while collaborating with internal teams, consultants, and municipal agencies to ensure projects are delivered efficiently and in compliance with applicable requirements. This position will support entitlement approvals, coordinate planning activities, and contribute to the successful execution of the company's commercial real estate development objectives. The Senior Planner and Zoning position reports directly to the President of AREC.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support land planning, zoning, and entitlement activities for commercial development projects. Oversee research and analysis of municipal zoning codes, comprehensive plans, and land development regulations.
  • Manage the preparation, submission, and approval of rezoning applications, general plan amendments, specific plans, tentative maps, development agreements, design review applications, and variances.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with municipal staff, elected officials, consultants, and other external stakeholders.
  • Supervise and mentor planning staff while providing technical guidance and professional development.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams, including civil engineers, architects, attorneys, environmental consultants, and surveyors.
  • Negotiate entitlement conditions, development agreements, and consultant contracts.
  • Review project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure projects remain on time and within budget.
  • Prepare and review reports, presentations, graphics, and exhibits using AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal planning regulations and company standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in urban planning or related field like architecture/engineering (preferred) At least 5-8 years of experience in urban planning or related field.

Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, Bluebeam and Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop and InDesign).
  • Knowledge of the site development process(specifically design standards and preliminary engineering due diligence).
  • Ability to read and understand complex zoning codes, general plans, specific plans, and technical reports.
  • Excellent organization and people skills including the ability to work with a wide variety of staff Ability to multi-task and prioritize projects while maintaining attention to detail.
