What is enterprise storage?

Enterprise storage refers to large-scale data storage systems designed to manage, store, and protect vast amounts of organizational data. These solutions offer high performance, reliability, scalability, and data security for businesses. Enterprise storage systems often include features such as redundancy, backup, disaster recovery, and support for multiple users and applications. Common types include storage area networks (SAN), network-attached storage (NAS), and cloud storage solutions. They are essential for businesses that handle critical data and require continuous access and high availability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an enterprise storage specialist?

To thrive as an Enterprise Storage Specialist, you need a solid foundation in data storage architectures, SAN/NAS systems, and backup/recovery solutions, usually backed by a degree in IT or related certifications. Familiarity with tools like EMC, NetApp, HPE, IBM storage systems, and certifications such as CompTIA Storage+ or vendor-specific credentials are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies ensure robust data management, minimize downtime, and support business continuity in complex enterprise environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in enterprise storage roles, and how can they be addressed?

Enterprise Storage professionals often encounter challenges such as managing rapid data growth, ensuring data security, and minimizing downtime during migrations or upgrades. Staying updated with evolving storage technologies and maintaining compatibility across hybrid environments can also be demanding. Addressing these challenges typically involves proactive capacity planning, implementing robust backup and disaster recovery solutions, and continuous skill development through training and certifications. Collaboration with IT security and networking teams is key to designing resilient, scalable storage infrastructure.

What is the difference between Enterprise Storage vs Storage Administrator?

AspectEnterprise StorageStorage Administrator
Primary FocusDesigning, implementing, and managing large-scale storage solutions for organizationsManaging and maintaining storage systems on a day-to-day basis
Required SkillsStorage architecture, SAN/NAS, data management, troubleshootingStorage system operation, backups, user support, routine maintenance
CertificationsStorage-specific certifications (e.g., EMC, NetApp)Vendor-specific certifications (e.g., Cisco, Dell)
Work EnvironmentData centers, enterprise IT departmentsData centers, IT support teams

Enterprise Storage professionals focus on designing and implementing large-scale storage solutions, while Storage Administrators handle daily management and support tasks. Both roles require storage certifications and work in similar environments, but their responsibilities differ in scope and strategic involvement.

Job description

Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Storage Engineer to support a large-scale enterprise storage and data platform migration. This individual will play a key role in migrating approximately 16 PB of data from an existing Dell Isilon storage environment to a new enterprise storage platform, followed by a transition of the data platform to Hammerspace.

This role will be highly focused on the execution, monitoring, troubleshooting, and validation of large-scale data migrations. Much of the migration activity will occur during off-hours and scheduled maintenance windows, requiring the engineer to provide on-call support and respond quickly to issues that arise during active data transfers.

The ideal candidate will have strong enterprise storage experience, hands-on experience with large-scale data migrations, and the ability to independently troubleshoot storage, networking, performance, and data-transfer issues in real time.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support the migration of approximately 16 PB of enterprise data from Dell Isilon to the new storage environment.
  • Execute, monitor, and troubleshoot large-scale data transfers during scheduled migration windows.
  • Support the subsequent transition of the data platform to Hammerspace.
  • Monitor migration performance, throughput, capacity, errors, and overall transfer health.
  • Troubleshoot failed, stalled, or degraded data transfers and resolve issues in real time.
  • Investigate storage, file system, permissions, connectivity, networking, and performance-related issues impacting migration activities.
  • Validate migrated data and help ensure data integrity throughout the migration process.
  • Coordinate with storage, infrastructure, networking, application, vendor, and project teams during migration activities.
  • Participate in after-hours and on-call coverage during scheduled migration events.
  • Document migration activities, issues, resolutions, and operational procedures.
  • Assist with migration planning, sequencing, testing, cutover activities, and post-migration validation.

Required Qualifications:
  • Strong experience supporting enterprise storage environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Dell Isilon and/or Dell PowerScale.
  • Experience executing or supporting large-scale data migrations.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise NAS and file-based storage technologies.
  • Experience troubleshooting high-volume data transfers and storage performance issues.
  • Understanding of file systems, permissions, networking, storage protocols, and data integrity concepts.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues independently during production migration windows.
  • Comfortable working scheduled evening, overnight, weekend, and on-call migration windows as required.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Hammerspace or similar data orchestration/data management platforms.
  • Experience with Pure Storage enterprise storage solutions.
  • Experience migrating petabyte-scale datasets.
  • Experience working in complex enterprise infrastructure environments.
  • Knowledge of NFS, SMB/CIFS, NAS, DNS, networking, and identity/permissions as they relate to enterprise storage.
  • Experience with migration automation, scripting, monitoring, or data-transfer utilities.
