What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Enterprise Storage roles, and how can they be addressed?

Enterprise Storage professionals often encounter challenges such as managing rapid data growth, ensuring data security, and minimizing downtime during migrations or upgrades. Staying updated with evolving storage technologies and maintaining compatibility across hybrid environments can also be demanding. Addressing these challenges typically involves proactive capacity planning, implementing robust backup and disaster recovery solutions, and continuous skill development through training and certifications. Collaboration with IT security and networking teams is key to designing resilient, scalable storage infrastructure.

What is enterprise storage?

Enterprise storage refers to large-scale data storage systems designed to manage, store, and protect vast amounts of organizational data. These solutions offer high performance, reliability, scalability, and data security for businesses. Enterprise storage systems often include features such as redundancy, backup, disaster recovery, and support for multiple users and applications. Common types include storage area networks (SAN), network-attached storage (NAS), and cloud storage solutions. They are essential for businesses that handle critical data and require continuous access and high availability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Enterprise Storage Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Enterprise Storage Specialist, you need a solid foundation in data storage architectures, SAN/NAS systems, and backup/recovery solutions, usually backed by a degree in IT or related certifications. Familiarity with tools like EMC, NetApp, HPE, IBM storage systems, and certifications such as CompTIA Storage+ or vendor-specific credentials are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies ensure robust data management, minimize downtime, and support business continuity in complex enterprise environments.

What are the types of enterprise storage?

Enterprise storage includes various types such as direct-attached storage (DAS), network-attached storage (NAS), storage area networks (SAN), and cloud storage solutions. These types are used to meet different scalability, performance, and data management needs in large organizations, often requiring knowledge of storage protocols and management tools.

What is the difference between Enterprise Storage vs Storage Administrator?

AspectEnterprise StorageStorage Administrator
Primary FocusDesigning, implementing, and managing large-scale storage solutions for organizationsManaging and maintaining storage systems on a day-to-day basis
Required SkillsStorage architecture, SAN/NAS, data management, troubleshootingStorage system operation, backups, user support, routine maintenance
CertificationsStorage-specific certifications (e.g., EMC, NetApp)Vendor-specific certifications (e.g., Cisco, Dell)
Work EnvironmentData centers, enterprise IT departmentsData centers, IT support teams

Enterprise Storage professionals focus on designing and implementing large-scale storage solutions, while Storage Administrators handle daily management and support tasks. Both roles require storage certifications and work in similar environments, but their responsibilities differ in scope and strategic involvement.

We Are

Synopsys is the leader in engineering solutions from silicon to systems, enabling customers to rapidly innovate AI-powered products. We deliver industry-leading silicon design, IP, simulation and analysis solutions, and design services. We partner closely with our customers across a wide range of industries to maximize their R&D capability and productivity, powering innovation today that ignites the ingenuity of tomorrow.

You Are

Building reliable enterprise storage infrastructure is about creating environments that are scalable, resilient and built to support critical engineering workloads.

This role is suited to someone with strong experience across enterprise SAN/NAS storage, Linuxadministrationand automation, with hands onexpertisein technologies such as NetApp, Pure Storage or EMC Isilon. Experience working across cloud or hybrid environments and a practical approach to troubleshooting and performanceoptimizationwill be key to success.

A proactive mindset, strong problem solvingskills and a passion for continuous improvement are just as important as technical expertise. Whether architecting new storage solutions, automating manual processes or resolving complex infrastructure challenges, there's an opportunity to make a real impact while supporting a global engineering organization.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Architect, deploy, and tune enterprise SAN and NAS solutions across NetApp, Pure Storage, and EMC/Isilon platforms that support engineering workloads globally
  • Build automation for storage provisioning, monitoring, and management using Python, Perl, Bash, and Ansible to cut down manual work and keep things consistent
  • Troubleshoot complex storage and Linux system issues-performance bottlenecks, connectivity problems, configuration drift across NFS, CIFS, iSCSI, FCP, and S3
  • Design and implement storage solutions in public cloud environments, bringing together on-premises infrastructure with cloud-native storage services
  • Lead storage architecture projects from evaluation through deployment, including capacity planning, vendor selection, migration execution, and mentoring junior engineers

The Impact You Will Have

  • The architecture decisions made here directlydeterminewhether engineering teams can scale their workloads or hit storage bottlenecks that slow down product development
  • The automation frameworks built willeliminatehundreds of hours of manual provisioning work each quarter, freeing IT resources for higher-value work
  • Performance tuning ensures that semiconductor design workflows, which generate massive I/O loads, run predictably and efficiently
  • Strong troubleshooting skills reduce storage-related incidents and mean time to resolution, keeping engineering teams productive
  • The standards and documentation created will shape how storage is architected and managed across Synopsys IT for years to come.

What You'll Need

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience architecting and managing enterprise SAN/NAS solutions in production environments
  • Deep technical knowledge of NetApp, Pure Storage, and EMC/Isilon platforms-deployment, configuration, and performance optimization
  • Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose complex system and storage issues at the OS and protocol level
  • Real experienceautomating infrastructure tasks using Python, Perl, Bash, and Ansible in production environments, plus working knowledge of NFS, CIFS, iSCSI, FCP, and S3 protocols
  • Experience with public cloud storage services (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and integrating cloud storage into hybrid architectures.Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Who You Are

  • When storage performance tanks, three questions and the right logs are usually enough toidentifywhetherit'sa network issue, a misconfigured LUN, or an application problem
  • Automation scripts written are readable and maintainable-other engineers can pick them up andmodifythem six months later without a translation guide
  • Pushing back is part of the job when someone asks for a storage solution without explaining workload characteristics, capacity growth, or performance requirements
  • Managing multiple architecture projects at once, each at a different stage, without losing track of dependencies or timelines comes naturally
  • Technical tradeoffs are communicated clearly to both engineers and IT leadership, explaining why one storage platform makes sense for a given use case without getting lost in vendor marketing

The Team You'll Be Part Of

This role joins the team responsible for managing Synopsys' global enterprise storage infrastructure across data centers worldwide. The team's mission is to keep engineering and R&D environments running efficiently by ensuring storage availability, maintainingenterprise storage platforms, and providing infrastructure support that internal engineering teams depend on every day. The work directly enables semiconductor design workflows that power the company's product development.
