What is an Engineering Technology Architectural Design AAS?

An Engineering Technology Architectural Design Associate of Applied Science (AAS) is a two-year degree focused on preparing students for careers in architectural drafting, design, and related fields. The program teaches foundational skills in computer-aided design (CAD), construction materials, building codes, and architectural design principles. Graduates are equipped to work as architectural technicians, CAD drafters, or design assistants, supporting architects and engineers in the design and construction industries. The AAS emphasizes practical, hands-on training to ensure students are job-ready upon graduation.

What types of projects do professionals with an AAS in Engineering Technology Architectural Design typically work on, and how do they contribute to a project team?

Professionals with an AAS in Engineering Technology Architectural Design often work on drafting construction documents, creating 3D models, and assisting in the design of residential, commercial, or industrial buildings. They are integral members of architectural and engineering teams, collaborating closely with architects, engineers, and contractors to translate conceptual designs into detailed plans. Their daily responsibilities might include using CAD software, reviewing building codes, and coordinating with stakeholders to ensure technical accuracy. This collaborative environment helps develop strong teamwork and communication skills, which are essential for career growth in architectural and engineering fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Technology Architectural Design AAS graduate, and why are they important?

To thrive in this role, you need a solid background in architectural drafting, construction methods, and building codes, typically supported by an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Engineering Technology with a focus on Architectural Design. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD and Revit), blueprint reading, and building information modeling (BIM) systems is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills help you excel in collaborative design environments. These competencies ensure accurate project documentation, compliance with regulations, and successful execution of architectural projects.
