What does an engineering program manager do?

An Engineering Program Manager oversees and coordinates engineering projects from conception to completion. They are responsible for planning project timelines, allocating resources, managing budgets, and ensuring that project deliverables meet quality standards. Engineering Program Managers serve as a bridge between engineering teams and other departments, helping to communicate goals, track progress, and resolve any obstacles that arise. Their role is critical in ensuring projects are delivered on time and within scope while meeting technical and business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering program manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Program Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management experience, and typically a relevant degree such as in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Microsoft Project, and certifications such as PMP or Agile methodologies are often required. Job description

Meet the team:

The Data Services team ensures the data used to build and improve automated driving technology is delivered reliably and meets high quality standards. The team works closely with internal partners and outside service providers to turn business needs into clear production plans, coordinate the people carrying out the work, track how operations are performing, and find ways to make data operations more efficient and dependable over time. Joining this team means stepping into a fast-moving, detail-oriented environment where data quality and delivery timelines directly affect the progress of self-driving technology. The work blends hands-on coordination, relationship management, and data-driven problem solving. Strong communicators who enjoy keeping complex, multi-team efforts on track will feel at home here.

What you'll do:ย

  • Coordinate daily production activities, track progress against delivery commitments, and maintain a clear picture of how each project is performing
  • Serve as the main point of contact for outside service providers, setting expectations around priorities, timelines, and quality, and directing their day-to-day work
  • Monitor service provider performance and build scorecards and reports that track efficiency, quality, and delivery
  • Translate production needs into staffing plans, helping determine how many people are needed, with what skills, and when
  • Build and maintain reports and dashboards that track production metrics such as speed, quality, cost, and efficiency, and use that data to spot trends or problems early
  • Identify opportunities to improve how work gets done, test changes, and measure whether those changes actually improve performance
  • Partner with teams across engineering, product development, finance, and program management to align production plans with company priorities
  • Manage issues as they arise, escalate problems to the right people, and lead recovery efforts until normal performance is restored

What you'll need to succeed:

  • Bachelors degree. In lieu of a Bachelors degree, an Associates degree with two years of employment experience or a High School Diploma or GED equivalent with four years of employment experience is required
  • Experience in operations, production coordination, vendor management, or a similar field
  • A track record of coordinating work across multiple teams and driving projects to completion
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use data to guide decisions
  • Willingness to build skills in statistics, database querying, and spreadsheet analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain information clearly to people at all levels, from hands-on workers to senior leaders
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage several priorities at once in a fast-changing environment
  • Confidence to question assumptions, flag unrealistic expectations, and advocate for what operations need to succeed

Nice to have:ย

  • Bachelor's degree in business, operations, supply chain, data analytics, engineering, or statistics
  • Experience coordinating outsourced teams or third-party service providers
  • Experience building performance dashboards or tracking metrics such as efficiency, cost, or speed of delivery
  • Familiarity with process improvement methods, database querying, or basic programming (such as Python)

What we offer you:

  • Competitive compensation packages
  • High-quality individual and family medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Health savings account with available employer match
  • Employer-matched 401(k) retirement plan with immediate vesting
  • Employer-paid group term life insurance and the option to elect voluntary life insurance
  • Paid parental leave
  • Paid medical leave
  • Unlimited vacation
  • 15 paid holidays
  • Daily lunches, snacks, and beverages available in all office locations
  • Pre-tax spending accounts for healthcare and dependent care expenses
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Monthly wellness stipend
  • Adoption/Surrogacy support program
  • Backup child and elder care program
  • Professional development reimbursement
  • Employee assistance program
  • Discounted programs that include legal services, identity theft protection, pet insurance, and more
  • Company and team bonding outlets: employee resource groups, quarterly team activity stipend, and wellness initiatives
