Leveraging project management tools and fostering a collaborative team culture can help address these challenges and drive successful project outcomes.

What does an Engineering Operations Manager do?

An Engineering Operations Manager oversees the daily operations of engineering teams to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. They coordinate between different departments, manage resources, implement processes to improve efficiency, and resolve operational issues. Their role often includes supervising staff, developing operational policies, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. Ultimately, they help align engineering activities with the company’s strategic goals.

What is the highest salary for an engineering manager?

What is the difference between Engineering Operations Manager vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectEngineering Operations ManagerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, management experienceBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering
Work EnvironmentOversees teams, manages projects, strategic planningDesign, analysis, testing, and development of mechanical systems
Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, automotive, tech companiesManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, product design

The Engineering Operations Manager focuses on overseeing engineering teams and managing operations, while Mechanical Engineers are involved in designing and developing mechanical systems. Both roles require engineering credentials, but their responsibilities and work environments differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Operations Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Operations Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and operations oversight, often supported by a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like MS Project or Asana), ERP systems, and relevant certifications such as PMP or Lean Six Sigma is typically required. Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set standout candidates apart in managing teams and driving process improvements. These competencies ensure efficient operations, timely project delivery, and alignment with organizational goals in an engineering environment.

Is ops manager higher than GM?

An Engineering Operations Manager typically focuses on overseeing engineering processes, project execution, and team coordination, while a General Manager (GM) has broader responsibilities including overall business operations and strategic management. The hierarchy depends on the company's structure, but GMs generally hold a higher executive position overseeing multiple departments, including operations managers. Therefore, a GM is usually higher in the organizational hierarchy than an operations manager.

Job description

LayerZero

The Future is Omnichain.

Founded in 2021, LayerZero's vision is to create a community of cross-chain developers, building dApps that are no longer constrained by individual blockchain capabilities. With LayerZero's simple, generic messaging protocol, builders will develop cross-chain dApps designed to unify the power of individual blockchains.

We are funded by the best investors in the world including:

a16z, Sequoia, PayPal, Binance Ventures, Coinbase Ventures, Uniswap Labs, Circle Ventures, Delphi Digital, and many more.

 ABOUT THE ROLE

We're looking for an Engineering Operations Lead to join our Engineering team. This is a dynamic role that combines elements of operations, strategic support, and organizational management. You'll play a crucial role in helping to streamline business processes, assist with key product launches, and manage the operational rhythm of the Engineering org.

The Engineering Operations Lead is designed to be a strategic enabler for this mission. By owning the operational backbone of our Engineering team and serving as the key operator for the org, you will remove friction, improve execution speed, and ensure Engineering teams operate at peak performance. You will serve as the connective tissue between Engineering and its cross-functional partners, abstracting away internal complexity so the team can focus on what it does best: shipping.

This is an operations and strategy role. You own the systems, data, and cadence that let the org run itself. Build the rigor and structure that scale with the team, not chasing individual tasks.

 WHAT YOU'LL DO

Core Business Strategy

  • Strategic Advisory: Serve as a strategic advisor to the CTO, Engineering Leadership and Product Leads. Provide hands-on advisory across internal process design, team organizational op model, data insights and day-to-day operational decision making. You'll ensure the team is executing on its strategic priorities throughout the year.
  • Data-Driven Insights: Deliver analysis that helps inform team performance, productivity metrics, weekly readouts, and key areas of optimization.
  • Priortization Framework: Build and maintain the frameworks that help Engineering focus capacity on the highest-impact initiatives and make clear, defensible trade-offs when priorities compete.
  • POKR Management & Tracking: Oversee and track Engineering OKRs, ensuring alignment with the company's long-term vision and strategy; surface trends, flag risks, and keep priorities on course.

Operational Execution

  • Operating Cadence & Delivery: Run the operational rhythm of the org including planning cycles, milestone & dependency tracking, and delivery visibility. Ensure commitments are clear and the team consistently hits its objectives.
  • Dashboards & Reporting: Build and maintain dashboards that make goals, progress, and delivery health visible to leadership and teams.
  • ENG Operations Management: Handle day-to-day Engineering operations, including Linear initiatives and projects, deadline management, and project prioritization, to ensure the team meets its objectives efficiently. You will own Linear end-to-end as the org's source of structure for work management.
  • Process Design & Automation: Identify and close operational gaps across the delivery lifecycle through improved workflows and automation, building scalable processes from the ground up.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Work closely with other Operations leads and act as the operational bridge between Engineering and its cross-functional partners (Product, BD, Finance, Legal, Marketing).
  • ENG Ops Trainings: Develop and run training sessions for the Engineering team, empowering them with the tools and processes needed to succeed.
 WHO YOU ARE
  • 5+ years of experience in business operations, engineering operations, or a similar function. Ideally within a FinTech, high-growth tech startup, or Web3 environment.
  • Deep understanding of how engineering organizations run: operating-model design, prioritization frameworks, operating cadence, and execution systems.
  • Proven ability to build and improve operational processes from the ground up (SOPs, automation, cross-functional workflows).
  • Strong analytical skills with experience building dashboards, performance reports, and data-driven recommendations.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication. You thrive as the connective tissue between Engineering, BD, Finance, Legal, Product, and Marketing.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and comfortable operating with a high degree of ownership and ambiguity.
  • Hands-on familiarity with Linear (or a comparable execution / issue-tracking system) and modern operational tooling.
  • Experience supporting or partnering closely with executive leadership is a strong plus.
