What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

Job description

Engineering Manager

We're looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Manufacturing and Process Engineering function. This is a senior leadership role with real impact — you'll shape how we design, optimize, and execute our production processes while developing a talented engineering team and partnering closely with operations, quality, supply chain, and sales.

What You'll Do

Leading Your Team

  • Coach and develop Manufacturing Engineers, Process Engineers, and Technicians through the full product lifecycle

  • Hold regular one-on-ones focused on career growth and technical development

  • Serve as the bridge between engineering and the rest of the business — translating customer needs into team priorities and communicating capabilities and constraints clearly

  • Negotiate timelines and priorities across departments with fairness and transparency

  • Resolve conflicts thoughtfully, keeping team morale and technical excellence in balance

Process Operations

  • Own manufacturing process design, optimization, automation, and standardization across machining, assembly, and secondary operations

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives with a hands-on approach — focused on safety, quality, delivery, productivity, and cost

  • Drive structured problem solving for complex engineering and production challenges

  • Champion standard work, visual management, and data-driven decision making

  • Define and track 5–8 key performance metrics aligned to company priorities

  • Review job routers for accuracy before release — operation sequence, resources, standards, and outside services

Cross-Functional Capital

  • Partner with Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Sales to support daily production and long-term growth

  • Oversee capital planning, equipment selection, installation, validation, and commissioning

  • Support new product and process introductions including DFMEA, PFMEA, PPAP, and control plans

  • Ensure engineering change management is controlled and consistently executed

Technical Compliance

  • Serve as the site's technical escalation point and manufacturing subject matter expert

  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, regulatory, and quality system requirements

  • Support off-shift and weekend production as needed to keep the business running

What You Bring

Required:

  • 8+ years in manufacturing or process engineering within a precision manufacturing environment

  • 4+ years leading or managing engineering teams

  • Strong background in precision CNC manufacturing

  • Expert-level proficiency in CAD/CAM systems (Autodesk, SolidWorks, Mastercam)

  • Solid PLC programming skills — troubleshooting, optimization, and logic interfaces

  • Strong working knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement

  • Applied understanding of GDT and engineering drawings

  • Experience with ERP systems (Epicor or equivalent)

  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 or AS9100 quality management systems

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required; extensive equivalent experience will be considered

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree or relevant certifications

  • Metallurgy or materials background

  • Six Sigma or similar formal CI certification

Who You Are

You're equally comfortable in a strategy conversation and on the shop floor. You lead with clarity, hold yourself and your team accountable, and know how to move fast without cutting corners. You build trust across departments and bring out the best in the people around you.
