What Does an Engineering Intern Do?

An engineering intern is a student or recent graduate of an engineering program who is gaining hands-on experience in their field through an internship program. Interns in most fields, including engineering, are paid very little and sometimes work only for academic credit. The value is in the experience gained working alongside experienced professionals. In engineering, interns will find that they have an opportunity begin to specialize their skills in an otherwise broad field. They will conduct basic engineering tasks, under supervision, as well as various administrative duties.

What are Engineering Interns?

Engineering Interns are students or recent graduates who work temporarily at a company to gain practical experience in the engineering field. They assist with various engineering tasks, such as conducting research, drafting technical documents, supporting design and development projects, and collaborating with experienced engineers. These internships help students apply their classroom knowledge to real-world situations and prepare them for full-time engineering roles after graduation.

What is the difference between Engineering Intern vs Engineering Technician?

AspectEngineering InternEngineering Technician

Work EnvironmentPrimarily in office settings, labs, or on-site project locationsHands-on technical work in labs, manufacturing, or field sites
Employer & Industry UsageInternships offered by engineering firms, companies, and government agenciesFull-time roles in manufacturing, construction, and engineering services
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for entry-level engineering experienceCompared for technical support roles in engineering projects

The main difference between an Engineering Intern and an Engineering Technician lies in their education, work focus, and employment status. Interns are usually students gaining initial experience, while Technicians are trained professionals performing technical tasks. Both roles support engineering projects but serve different stages of career development and technical responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Intern, you typically need a background in engineering fundamentals, strong problem-solving abilities, and enrollment in or completion of an engineering degree program. Familiarity with technical tools such as CAD software, MATLAB, or project management systems is often required. Strong communication, willingness to learn, and teamwork skills help interns adapt quickly and contribute effectively. These skills ensure that interns can support engineering teams, learn from real-world projects, and build a solid foundation for future roles in the field.

How do Engineering Interns typically collaborate with full-time engineers during their internship?

Engineering Interns often work closely with full-time engineers by assisting on ongoing projects, attending team meetings, and participating in code reviews or design discussions. They may be paired with a mentor or supervisor who provides regular guidance and feedback. This collaborative environment helps interns develop technical skills, understand workplace expectations, and build professional relationships that can be valuable for future career growth.

Job description

(Chicago based) Applied AI Intern โ€“ Salt Os

Office of the CBO & Sales Solutions

Help Us Build the Future of AI for Regulated Industries

Our Mission

Salt AI is founded by industry veterans in high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence and life sciences. Salt AI is dedicated to providing reliable and transparent AI solutions that advance the underlying goals and purpose of life sciences teams. Weโ€™ve focused our collective expertise on a tech-enabled offering that realizes successful outcomes faster and more efficiently than previously imagined.

Salt is building the intelligence layer for the enterprise. In a world where AI is fragmented across models, tools, and data silos, Salt unifies them through a compliance-first orchestration platform. Our OS turns regulated industries like life sciences into intelligent, adaptive systemsโ€”where autonomous AI agents operate securely, governably, and in harmony. Salt is defining how enterprises will deploy and scale AI responsibly at the foundation level.

About This Role

Salt AI is looking for a motivated intern to work directly with our Chief Business Officer and Sales Solutions team. Youโ€™ll help design, prototype, and implement AI-driven solutions across pharmaceutical, biotech, and enterprise applicationsโ€”with hands-on exposure to how agentic AI can transform real-world R&D and commercial workflows. Youโ€™ll work directly with the Salt toolkit alongside experienced scientists, engineers, and forward-deployed solutions experts.

This is a ground-floor opportunity at the intersection of AI orchestration infrastructure, life sciences, and enterprise go-to-marketโ€”helping shape how regulated organizations adopt AI in their most critical processes.

Example Projects

โ€ข Computational protein design workflows to accelerate therapeutic discovery

โ€ข Clinical trial design with agentic leverage

โ€ข Drug discovery pipelines using multi-agent coordination (e.g., modeling, simulation, optimization, critic agents)

โ€ข Personalization engines driving omnichannel customer touchpoints

โ€ข AI copilots for genetic counseling

โ€ข Full-team workflow design for agent-led financial restructurings

What Youโ€™ll Do

โ€ข Architect and iterate on agent-based systems that execute complex workflows, particularly in drug discovery and life sciences R&D.

โ€ข Work alongside the CBO and solutions engineers to understand client workflows end-to-end, from initial discovery through prototype delivery.

โ€ข Build functional workflow prototypes using Saltโ€™s orchestration platform, translating client and research problems into working demonstrations.

โ€ข Reproduce and evaluate existing AI models and research papers to assess their applicability within Saltโ€™s infrastructure.

โ€ข Help identify opportunities within drug discovery and adjacent domains where AI can meaningfully enhance processes and outcomes.

โ€ข Support the development and optimization of ML and deep learning models for research applications, adapting them for new use cases.

โ€ข Research domain-specific requirements across life sciences, financial services, and energyโ€”feeding findings back to the commercial and product teams.

โ€ข Contribute to reusable templates, documentation, and technical content that enable partners to self-serve and scale.

โ€ข Stay current with emerging AI trends, agent frameworks, and orchestration tooling, and share insights with the broader team.

โ€ข Collaborate cross-functionally to translate scientific and business problems into AI-driven approaches.

Requirements

โ€ข Currently pursuing a Bachelorโ€™s, Masterโ€™s, or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field.

โ€ข Experience with LLMs, agent frameworks, or workflow orchestration tools (e.g., LangChain, AutoGen, BioNemo, or similar).

โ€ข Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, or similar).

โ€ข Academic or personal AI/ML project experienceโ€”youโ€™ve built things, not just studied them.

โ€ข Exposure to analyzing or reproducing research papers.

โ€ข Coursework or project work related to life sciences, bioinformatics, or computational biology.

โ€ข Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

โ€ข Effective communication and teamwork skillsโ€”able to translate technical concepts into practical, client-facing applications.

โ€ข Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced, build-from-scratch environment.

Nice to Have

โ€ข Prior experience in drug discovery or AI research.

โ€ข Interest in pharmaceutical or biotech applications, particularly therapeutic discovery pipelines.

โ€ข Familiarity with scientific computing environments, data lineage, or provenance tracking.

โ€ข A scrappy mentalityโ€”comfortable wearing multiple hats, driving clarity in ambiguous situations, and doing whatever it takes to move things forward.

โ€ข Professional-level English communication skills.

Youโ€™ll Know Youโ€™re Succeeding If

โ€ข Youโ€™re consistently thinking about how clients use the prototypes and workflows you build, and which problems they solve.

โ€ข The tools and templates you build become reusable assets that the solutions team relies on, not one-off demos.

โ€ข Cross-functional teamsโ€”commercial, product, and engineeringโ€”see the value in your work and pull you into new conversations.

โ€ข Youโ€™re learning fast and contributing meaningfully to real client engagements.

Perks and Benefits

โ€ข Competitive internship compensation based on location.

โ€ข Fully remote environment, working primarily within U.S.-based time zones.

โ€ข Direct mentorship from senior leadership including the CBO and solutions engineering team.
