ENGINEERING INTERN
JOB DESCRIPTION
Department: Engineering
Reports To (Title): Engineering Manager
Status Intern, Seasonal
Classification: Hourly
Location: Onsite Bolingbrook
Typical Schedule: M-F 8:30 AM โ€“ 5;00 PM (8 HOUR DAY)

SUMMARY
This position will support manufacturing operations within an FDA-regulated cosmetics production environment and provides hands-on experience in process improvement, equipment optimization, quality compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives. The intern will work closely with engineering, quality, and production teams to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant manufacturing processes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
โ€ข Assist in analyzing and improving manufacturing processes for cosmetic products, including creams, lotions, and personal care items
โ€ข Support process validation activities, including documentation and data collection
โ€ข Participate in troubleshooting equipment and production issues to improve efficiency and reduce downtime
โ€ข Help develop and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and batch records
โ€ข Assist with data analysis related to production yields, cycle times, and quality metrics
โ€ข Support implementation of continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, Six Sigma, 5S, etc.)
โ€ข Collaborate with Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) teams to ensure compliance with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)
โ€ข Contribute to root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) activities
โ€ข Assist in equipment qualification, maintenance documentation, and calibration tracking
โ€ข Follow all safety, environmental, and regulatory guidelines in manufacturing operations
โ€ข Ability to work weekends or holidays when necessary.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
โ€ข Currently pursuing a Bachelorโ€™s or masterโ€™s degree in chemical, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering. Manufacturing Engineering or related field preferred.
โ€ข Basic understanding of manufacturing processes and engineering principles
โ€ข Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
โ€ข Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
โ€ข Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
โ€ข Ability to work independently and as part of a team
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
โ€ข Familiarity with FDA regulations, cGMP, or regulated manufacturing environments (cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, or food)
โ€ข Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., Excel advanced functions, Minitab)
โ€ข Exposure to Lean Manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies
โ€ข Knowledge of process documentation and technical writing
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position in a manufacturing setting:
โ€ข Ability to walk or stand for extended periods of time (10 hours minimum)
โ€ข Consistent exposure to manufacturing environments, which may include noise, dust, temperature variations, and the need to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
โ€ข Ability to lift approximately 50 lbs. continuously during shift, including twisting, turning or bending with or without product in hand
โ€ข Visual and auditory acuity are necessary for reading reports, viewing computer screens, and communicating effectively in person and via digital platforms.
โ€ข Manual dexterity for keyboarding, writing, and handling office tools and technology.
โ€ข Occasional travel between manufacturing sites or attending off-site meetings, trainings, or conferences.
โ€ข Ability to work in extreme environmental temperatures

COMPENSATION
The compensation offered will be determined by other factors such as level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The base hiring compensation range:
โ€ข Underclassmen (Freshmen/Sophomores): Tend to earn $19.50 to $23.00 per hour.
โ€ข Upperclassmen (Juniors/Seniors) amp; Graduate Students: $23.50 to $27 per hour.
