How much do engineering geologist jobs pay per year?
Are engineering geologists in demand?
What are some typical challenges faced by engineering geologists in their daily work?
Engineering Geologists often encounter challenges such as unpredictable subsurface conditions, tight project deadlines, and the need to interpret limited or incomplete geological data. You may need to work outdoors in various weather conditions and adapt quickly to changes in site requirements or project scope. Collaborating closely with civil engineers, contractors, and other specialists is crucial to ensure that your geological assessments support safe and successful infrastructure development. These challenges offer rewarding opportunities to apply scientific expertise in real-world situations and make a direct impact on project outcomes.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering geologist?
To thrive as an Engineering Geologist, you need a solid background in geology, soil mechanics, and geotechnical engineering, typically backed by a relevant degree and field experience. Familiarity with geological modeling software, GIS, and industry certifications such as a Professional Geologist (PG) license are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this field. These qualifications ensure accurate site assessments and smooth collaboration with engineering teams on complex construction and infrastructure projects.
What does an engineering geologist do?
An Engineering Geologist assesses soil, rock, groundwater, and other earth materials to evaluate their suitability for construction and infrastructure projects. They analyze geological hazards such as landslides, earthquakes, and subsidence to mitigate risks. Their work involves field investigations, laboratory testing, and collaborating with engineers to ensure safe and stable foundations for structures.

- Mentor junior staff and contribute to ERM's technical excellence and collaborative culture
- Support business growth through proposal development, client engagement, and repeat work
You are a technically strong consultant with proven project management experience and the confidence to lead multidisciplinary teams. You balance field knowledge with strategic thinking, communicate effectively with clients and regulators, and take ownership of project delivery, safety, and quality.
Required- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, or a closely related discipline
- 4+ years of experience (5-8 years preferred) with progressive responsibility on environmental site investigation and remediation projects
- Demonstrated experience working under CERCLA, RCRA, and state regulatory programs

- Environmental field experience including soil, groundwater, and vapor investigations
- 40hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification
- Strong commitment to health, safety, and risk management
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to client sites
- Master's degree in Engineering, Geology, or related field
- Professional licensure (PE or PG) or ability to obtain licensure in the near future
- Experience with vapor intrusion assessment and mitigation, LNAPL/DNAPL investigations, and highresolution site characterization tools
- Familiarity with EQuIS or other environmental data management platforms
- Manage and execute site investigation and remediation projects involving soil, groundwater, sediment, and vapor intrusion, including projects with moderate to complex technical and regulatory challenges
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee field programs including sampling, drilling, well installation, remediation system implementation, and O&M
- Develop and review work plans, technical reports, conceptual site models, scopes of work, schedules, cost estimates, and health & safety plans
- Interpret environmental data, conduct QA/QC evaluations, identify data gaps, and guide technical decisionmaking
- Evaluate remedial alternatives and support clients in developing and negotiating costeffective closure strategies with regulatory agencies
- Delegate work effectively, mentor junior staff, and engage ERM subjectmatter experts to deliver maximum client value
- Prepare proposals and actively participate in business development and client relationship management
- Build strong, collaborative relationships with ERM colleagues, clients, regulators, and subcontractors
