Job description

The Design Project Manager plays a key role in our organization by providing senior leadership leading key project(s) from conceptual phases through design coincident with pre-construction then through construction administration and commissioning/close-out. This includes oversight and direction of the design team and relationship development with the client to provide our clients with projects that perform and are safely completed within budget, on schedule, in accordance with quality standards and meeting the customer's satisfaction. Typically, this position is also seeking to strengthen and extend our relationships to new opportunities with existing clients.
The design manager will also conceptualize plans to provide high level solutions to overall projects or more detailed solutions to specific client issues some of which may result in or lead to design/build project opportunities. These project opportunities will often involve master planning, site due diligence parameter development and evaluation, assisting in site searches, program development, conceptual design, and basis of system criteria development. These opportunities often lead to the management and development of full-scale project assignments.
This position will also focus on evaluating design solutions for conformance to the conceptual plan and basis of system criteria established for client sites, reviewing independently developed designs for pre-construction / construction management opportunities, and confirming the technical requirements for commissioning efforts on in-house projects. The skills developed in this position will assist you in future assignments as a director of this service platform, a project executive, and organization leader.
Overview of Role:
Established skills at previous level, works independently and directs project staff. Functions as the senior level contact with client. Provides senior oversight/input on project concepts. Maintains client contact and development of work on future projects, can identify areas where PROTECS can assist / improve client operations and is ready to address PROTECS issues with the client and take appropriate action to resolve them / promote PROTECS services. Will oversee multiple projects / assignments and staff / subconsultants. Will work to develop staff and projects through training, project exposure, risk management, technical development, etc. Responsible for project development and concept phase budgets.
Typical Activities:
  • Responsible for design phase design/build project development
  • Able to develop or foster the development of design documentation on design/build projects to suit the company and project objectives.
  • Extends relationships on projects toward the development of further work.
  • Responsible for project development from concept through project process
  • May perform high level design activities to conceptualize facilities, renovations, or system solutions.
  • Will provide evaluation of or check on sub-consultant design solutions.
  • Maintains relationship with client personnel.
  • Ensures the PROTECS project team is executing its duties in regard to technical deliverables.
  • Manages and directs design consultants.
  • Seeks to develops client relationships and project opportunities through technical capabilities.
  • Supports other project team members including Sr. Project Managers, Project Managers, Project Engineers, etc.
  • Responsibility for concept project budgets and schedules
  • Develops and assists in presentations.
  • Confirms quality of design deliverables
  • Ensures conformance of design documents with Basis of System Criteria and/or Owner Program Requirements
  • Evaluates design solutions for project applications.
  • Facilitates commissioning approach and documents when developed in-house with insight on third party commissioning under PROTECS delivery.
  • Provide field review / punch list walk-through on design build projects.
  • Assist in troubleshooting project start-up technical issues initially in design document review and, if needed, in support of field team efforts.
  • Performs other tasks as needed to fulfill company needs.

Requirements
Experience level: 10-15 years minimum
Background: Engineering degree with practical applied experience; professional registration preferred, additional education and training encouraged.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven capability to successfully lead multi-discipline design teams from concept through construction documents.
  • Specific expertise in engineering degree discipline
  • Working knowledge of other engineering and architectural disciplines
  • Demonstrated design project management and design phase cost control.
  • AutoCAD and Revit capabilities
  • Capability to identify construction project cost impacts in design.
  • Project management software capability such as Timberline, Prolog, or Procore
  • Blue Beam and Microsoft Office Suite proficiency
  • Detail oriented
