What are engineering companies?

Engineering companies are organizations that provide specialized technical services related to the design, development, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure, products, or systems. They work in various fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering, offering solutions for projects like bridges, buildings, machinery, and industrial plants. These companies often serve public and private sector clients, ensuring projects meet safety, regulatory, and efficiency standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an engineering company, and why are they important?

To thrive in an engineering company, you need a solid background in engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and often a relevant engineering degree or professional certification. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or SolidWorks, as well as familiarity with project management tools, is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure effective project execution, innovation, and sustained success in a competitive, technology-driven environment.

What types of collaborative projects can I expect to work on in an engineering company, and how do cross-functional teams typically operate?

In engineering companies, it's common to participate in multidisciplinary projects where you'll collaborate closely with professionals from other departments such as design, manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management. Cross-functional teams often meet regularly to align on goals, share progress, and problem-solve together. This collaborative environment encourages knowledge sharing and innovation but also requires strong communication skills and adaptability to different working styles. Being proactive in team discussions and open to feedback are key to succeeding in such settings.

  • Oversee multiple concurrent transportation and infrastructure projects including highways, bridges, interchanges, roadway improvements, and transit-related initiatives
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in full compliance with FDOT standards
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with FDOT leadership, municipalities, counties, contractors, and key industry stakeholders
  • Support business development initiatives, proposal efforts, project pursuits, and strategic growth opportunities throughout Florida
  • Review project performance metrics and implement best practices to improve efficiency and project outcomes
  • Provide guidance on contract administration, claims avoidance, construction management, quality assurance, and risk mitigation
  • Lead staffing strategy, succession planning, and professional development initiatives within the CEI division
  • Represent us at industry events, conferences, professional organizations, and client meetings
  • Collaborate with executive leadership on long-term growth strategy and market expansion initiatives

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related engineering discipline
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in transportation engineering, construction management, and CEI services
  • Extensive experience working with FDOT projects and programs
  • Deep knowledge of FDOT specifications, construction administration, contract management, and quality assurance requirements
  • Proven leadership experience managing large multidisciplinary engineering and inspection teams
  • Demonstrated success overseeing multiple large-scale transportation projects simultaneously
  • Strong understanding of transportation infrastructure design, construction, maintenance, and operations
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, client management, and relationship-building skills
  • Established professional network within Florida's transportation and infrastructure community

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience serving as CEI Project Administrator, Senior Project Engineer, Resident Engineer, CEI Program Manager, or Transportation Operations Leader
  • Experience managing district-wide or statewide FDOT programs
  • Involvement with organizations such as Florida Engineering Society, American Council of Engineering Companies, or transportation industry committees

  • Driving profitable growth of CEI operations across Florida
  • Maintaining exceptional FDOT client satisfaction and project performance metrics
  • Identifying and securing new transportation infrastructure opportunities
  • Building a high-performing team culture focused on technical excellence and project delivery
