Job description

Course description:ย Students will assemble a portfolio of communication assignments drawn from theirย second and third yearย Civil Engineering courses as a showcase of their ability to meet the graduate attributes for communication. The student willย demonstrateย competence in discipline specific written, oral, and visual communication through theย selectionย of assignments for the portfolio. Each entry will be framed byย a short introductionย speaking to the context of the work and its significance in the portfolio. Students whose communication work is not up to standard will be provided with opportunities for revision. The course will be offered on a credit/no credit basis; students who receive no credit must retake the course in year 4. This is a 0.00 weighted course.ย

Salary:ย CUPE minimum salary rates are: Writing Instructor 1 - $56.46/hr plus 4% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 1 Long Term - $60.69/hr plus 4% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 - $60.69/hr plus 6% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 Long Term - $62.15/hr plus 6% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 (priority) - $62.48/hr plus 6% vacation pay and Writing Instructor 2 (priority) Long Term- $63.95/hr plus 6% vacation pay. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from ratesย statedย in this posting, the ratesย statedย in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.ย ย ย ย 

Minimum Qualifications:ย Candidates should have at least aย Master'sย degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability toย work as part of a team.ย 

Preferred Qualifications:ย qualifications include a PhD inย an appropriate disciplineย (as above), and TESL or other training/certification in second-language instruction at the university level. Familiarity with engineering communication practices, or other experience in Civil Engineering education and practice is alsoย highlyย desirable.ย 

Description of duties:ย ย 

Writing Instructors will work as Communication Instructors (CIs) and beย requiredย to work with students and/or grade assignments, as well as work with the portfolio coordinator and otherย CIsย on curriculum development. Duties include:ย ย 

  • attend course planning meetings with teaching teamย ย 

  • be responsible forย scheduling, holding, and documentingย requiredย and student-requested meetings withย up to 30ย studentsย ย 

  • provideย written and/or oral feedback on portfolioย selectionย and introductionsย ย 

  • participateย in Portfolio Workshopsย 

  • must have the ability to adapt to different communication instruction activities and move online ifย required.ย
