What is an engineer?

Engineers design, build, and maintain the functional aspects of a product, structure, or system for their specific engineering industry. Their specific job description relates to all of the detailed tasks, responsibilities, skills, and education requirements that a company or organization requires for their engineering specialty. For example, electrical engineers develop, monitor, and test electrical systems. Civil engineers design, construct, and maintain large infrastructure projects, such as highways, bridges, and airports. Many engineers begin their career with an internship or apprenticeship while they are still in school, and then acquire an entry-level position. As they learn more about the industry, engineers are given their own projects and more responsibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineer?

To thrive as an Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, problem-solving, and engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with industry-specific software such as CAD tools, simulation platforms, and, in some fields, certifications like FE or PE is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills set exceptional engineers apart. These abilities ensure effective project delivery, innovative solutions, and smooth collaboration in technical environments.

What does an engineer do?

An engineer applies principles of science and mathematics to develop solutions for technical problems. They design, build, and test products, systems, or structures while considering efficiency, safety, and cost. Engineers can work in a variety of fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, each with its own specialized focus. Their work often involves teamwork, problem-solving, and the use of advanced technology.

How do engineers typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Engineers often work closely with professionals from various departments such as product management, design, and quality assurance to ensure project requirements are met. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to align on goals, discuss technical constraints, and review progress. Effective communication and teamwork are key, as engineers may need to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical colleagues and incorporate feedback from different stakeholders. This cross-functional approach helps ensure that projects are delivered efficiently and meet all necessary standards.

Job description

Maintenance Manager

Stamps, AR

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Our client is a publicly traded, global energy services and solutions company with operations on six continents. Their portfolio spans energy services, industrial chemicals, and critical minerals - serving the oil and gas industry while expanding aggressively into low-carbon energy markets. Founded over 40 years ago, the company brings deep chemistry expertise, key mineral acreage, and global infrastructure to help meet the demand for sustainable energy in the 21st century.

THE OPPORTUNITY

This is a critical leadership role overseeing all maintenance operations at a chemical manufacturing facility within one of the company's fastest-growing segments. You'll own asset reliability, PM/PdM programs, contractor management, and maintenance KPIs - partnering closely with operations and engineering to keep the plant running safely and efficiently. The right candidate is a reliability-minded leader who builds systems, develops people, and uses data to drive uptime.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN

- Lead site maintenance operations with a focus on safety, environmental compliance, reliability, cost control, and continuous improvement

- Own all maintenance activities - preventive, predictive, and corrective - to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant assets

- Analyze critical equipment and processes to identify downtime and reliability risks; develop and execute maintenance strategies and contingency plans

- Establish and manage PM and PdM programs including vibration analysis, lubrication, inspections, and condition-based monitoring

- Develop and maintain strong partnerships with external contractors and service providers for routine maintenance, turnarounds, and annual inspections

- Drive technical analysis of production processes to identify equipment, process, and instrumentation/control improvement opportunities

- Measure, track, and report maintenance KPIs - OEE, MTBF, maintenance cost, schedule compliance - and use data to prioritize improvements

- Lead equipment failure investigations, perform root-cause analysis, and implement design, process, or procedural changes to prevent recurrence

- Develop and lead the site's continuous improvement program including KPI reporting, incident/near-miss investigations, skills training, and CI teams

- Collaborate with operations, engineering, HSEQ, and supply chain to ensure maintenance strategies align with production goals and capital project execution

- Support capital projects by providing maintenance input on equipment selection, reliability, maintainability, and lifecycle cost considerations

WHAT YOU BRING

- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field

- 6-10+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment

- Experience with drilling operations and downhole equipment

- Valid driver's license

- Ability to pass pre-employment background, medical, alcohol, and drug screening

WHY THIS ROLE

- Publicly traded company with a stable platform and aggressive growth into low-carbon and critical minerals markets

- Full ownership of the maintenance function at a high-visibility facility

- Global footprint with six-continent operations - real career mobility for strong performers

- Capital investment in new equipment and reliability programs - you won't be fighting to keep old assets alive with no budget
