What is an engineering manager?

An Engineering Manager is a professional who oversees engineering teams, guiding them to achieve project goals and company objectives. They are responsible for managing people, processes, and resources, ensuring that engineering projects are completed on time and within budget. Engineering Managers also collaborate with other departments, mentor team members, and help develop technical strategies. Their role bridges the gap between technical engineering tasks and organizational leadership.

How does an engineer manager typically support professional development within their team?

Engineer Managers play a key role in fostering the growth of their team members by providing regular feedback, identifying learning opportunities, and encouraging participation in training or mentorship programs. They often help engineers set clear career goals, guide them through skill development, and advocate for their advancement within the organization. By promoting a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration, Engineer Managers help team members stay motivated and aligned with both personal and company objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager, and why are they important?

To excel as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong technical background in engineering principles, project management experience, and often a relevant degree such as in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Asana), version control systems (such as Git), and possibly certifications like PMP or Agile Scrum Master are typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills help you motivate teams and manage stakeholders effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering successful projects, fostering a productive team environment, and driving organizational goals.

Siemens is seeking an Engineering Manager to help lead the Power Protection & Automation Engineering Development Program (EDP). The EDP is a rotational program that develops recent engineering graduates through technical training, hands-on field rotations, project exposure, report-outs, and mentorship across Protection and Automation. This role will support the technical and professional development of EDP participants as they build deeper knowledge in substation protection, automation, controls, communications, FATs, SATs, commissioning, and field execution. As the program continues to grow, this manager will partner with the Technical Talent Director, Engineering Managers, Power Academy, mentors, and project teams to coordinate deployments, technical training, performance feedback, safety expectations, overtime approvals, important metrics, and continuous program improvements.
This hybrid position is based at our corporate headquarters in Wendell, NC. Located in the heart of the Research Triangle about 20 minutes east of Raleigh, Wendell offers top-rated schools, a mild climate, easy access to mountains and coast, and a cost of living that allows your compensation to go further. Local candidates are encouraged to apply. We offer relocation assistance for eligible candidates.
You'll make a difference by:
  • Support the day-to-day management of the Power Protection & Automation EDP.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop EDP participants throughout their rotational experience.
  • Provide technical guidance to help participants build deeper knowledge in protection, automation, relay applications, controls, communications, FATs, SATs, commissioning, and field execution.
  • Coordinate training schedules, field rotations, site assignments, report-outs, and deployment plans in partnership with Engineering Managers and project teams.
  • Partner with Power Academy, mentors, and domain experts to improve technical curriculum, hands-on learning, and program consistency.
  • Track participant performance, indicators, safety, field readiness, employee-overtime, and development progress.
  • Support mentors and field teams by helping reinforce technical expectations, learning objectives, and development plans for each participant.
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, and selection activities for future EDP cohorts.
  • Drive continuous improvement of the EDP curriculum, rotation structure, onboarding process, report-out expectations, and overall program experience.
  • Create an environment where early-career engineers feel supported, challenged, and prepared for long-term engineering roles within PPA.
You'll win us over by having the following qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in power systems, MV or HV switchgear, power protection and automation, controls, commissioning, field service, or technical project execution.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, coaching, or developing engineers or technical employees with or without direct reportees.
  • Working knowledge of protection relays, commissioning, field execution, switchgear testing, Field Acceptance Tests, and Site Acceptance Tests.
  • Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple participants, deployments, schedules, collaborators, priorities, critical metrics, and development plans.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 15% domestically.
  • Must be physically in the Wendell, NC office 2+ days a week.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without sponsorship now or in the future.
