What is an Engineering Manager?

An Engineering Manager is a professional who oversees engineering teams, guiding them to achieve project goals and company objectives. They are responsible for managing people, processes, and resources, ensuring that engineering projects are completed on time and within budget. Engineering Managers also collaborate with other departments, mentor team members, and help develop technical strategies. Their role bridges the gap between technical engineering tasks and organizational leadership.

How does an Engineer Manager typically support professional development within their team?

Engineer Managers play a key role in fostering the growth of their team members by providing regular feedback, identifying learning opportunities, and encouraging participation in training or mentorship programs. They often help engineers set clear career goals, guide them through skill development, and advocate for their advancement within the organization. By promoting a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration, Engineer Managers help team members stay motivated and aligned with both personal and company objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Manager, and why are they important?

To excel as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong technical background in engineering principles, project management experience, and often a relevant degree such as in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Asana), version control systems (such as Git), and possibly certifications like PMP or Agile Scrum Master are typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills help you motivate teams and manage stakeholders effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering successful projects, fostering a productive team environment, and driving organizational goals.

TYPE: Full-Time/Exempt

LOCATION: Fremont, CA (Onsite)

SALARY: $120,000-$140,000

The Test Engineering Manager oversees the overall operations of the Test Development Engineering team, including technical project execution, personnel management, and cross-functional collaboration. This role ensures that testing strategies are aligned with organizational goals for quality, scalability, and on-time delivery. The Manager is responsible for shaping the team’s direction, driving process improvements, and managing resource planning, while serving as a key liaison between engineering, manufacturing, and executive stakeholders.

The Test Engineering team plays a vital role in the manufacturing process by ensuring server and system-level products meet performance, quality, and reliability standards before packaging. Positioned between assembly and final shipment, the team develops and executes testing strategies based on customer Manufacturing Test Requirement Documents or custom validation scripts. Their responsibilities span functional testing, failure analysis, infrastructure maintenance, and continuous yield improvement. The team collaborates closely with internal departments and global R&D teams to support both high-volume production and new product introduction (NPI)..

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Test Development Engineering team, including performance evaluations, career development, and workforce planning.
  • Align testing strategies and test infrastructure investments with company priorities and customer expectations for product quality and scalability.
  • Oversee the delivery of automated test solutions for NPIs and production, ensuring quality, efficiency, and on-time execution.
  • Drive strategic initiatives across test automation, infrastructure design, and process standardization to support current and future manufacturing needs.
  • Serve as the escalation point for high-impact technical issues, coordinating resolution across teams including engineering, production, QA, and HQ development groups.
  • Define team structure, roles, and succession planning to support growing business needs while maintaining a high-performance culture.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for test efficiency, yield, test coverage, and issue resolution, and communicate progress to senior leadership.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with cross-functional partners in manufacturing, operations, firmware, and program management.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement within the team.

Required Skills/Abilities: (Example of skills set)

  • Strong leadership and team management skills with a proven track record of building and leading high-performing engineering teams.
  • Deep understanding of automated test systems, server validation, and test architecture in a production environment.
  • Solid background in Python scripting, Linux systems, version control (Git), and test infrastructure technologies.
  • Strategic thinking and planning ability, with the agility to manage both daily operations and long-term initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of navigating complex organizational structures and driving alignment.
  • Data-driven decision-making and ability to present results, roadmaps, and risk assessments to stakeholders and executives.
  • Experience leading cross-functional technical projects involving multiple teams and geographic sites.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (Master’s or MBA preferred).
  • 4+ years of experience in hardware test development or validation engineering, with at least 2 years in a managerial or people leadership role.
  • Experience in high-volume server or system manufacturing environments is highly preferred.

Physical Requirements: (Example of requirement)

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to access and navigate various departments within the organization’s facilities.
