Job Description

The Managing Engineer (Software Development/Container Workloads) leads a team responsible for designing and building reference applications and implementation patterns that promote engineering best practices across the enterprise. These reference implementations demonstrate proven approaches for integrating with core platforms, services, and infrastructure, enabling engineering teams to build secure, scalable, and resilient applications.
This role is both a people leader and a hands-on technical leader, expected to operate as the most senior engineer on the team. The Managing Engineer drives architectural decisions, contributes directly to design and code, and ensures that all reference implementations reflect production-grade standards for performance, reliability, and efficiency.
The Managing Engineer applies expertise in software engineering, distributed systems, and platform integration to produce high-quality, reusable exemplars (e.g., service-to-cache integrations, messaging patterns, service-to-service communication). They ensure these patterns are not only functional but optimized for real-world enterprise scale and operational excellence.
In addition to team leadership responsibilities, this role has broad organizational impact, influencing engineering standards, guiding adoption of best practices, and partnering with platform, infrastructure, and application teams to ensure alignment.
The Allstate internal job title for this position is Software Engineer Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of software engineers.

  • Design and deliver reference architectures, sample applications, and reusable implementation patterns.

  • Partner with product, platform, and infrastructure teams to address real-world engineering challenges.

  • Provide technical leadership for architecture, design reviews, and implementation decisions.

  • Promote engineering best practices related to scalability, resilience, security, and maintainability.

  • Build understanding of platform dependencies (e.g., caching, messaging, networking, identity, observability)

  • Drive adoption of reusable patterns and standards across engineering teams.

  • Participate in coding, prototyping, and troubleshooting activities as needed.

  • Manage staffing, prioritization, delivery planning, and team performance.

  • Influence engineering standards and platform adoption across the organization.

Essential Qualifications

  • 7 years or more of software engineering experience building enterprise-scale applications and services.

  • 2 years or more of technical leadership, team leadership, or people management experience. (Or Equivalent)

  • Strong proficiency in Java and experience building distributed applications and services.

  • Experience developing cloud-native applications in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.

  • Experience with container technologies and Kubernetes-based deployments.

  • Strong understanding of APIs, microservices, and service integration patterns.

  • Experience with event-driven architectures, messaging platforms, or asynchronous processing frameworks.

  • Understanding of distributed systems concepts including scalability, resiliency, fault tolerance, and performance optimization.

  • Experience partnering with cross-functional teams to deliver technical solutions.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence engineering decisions.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience designing enterprise reference architectures, reusable frameworks, or implementation patterns.

  • Experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming platforms.

  • Experience with Python, Node.js, JavaScript, or React.

  • Experience with observability solutions including logging, monitoring, tracing, and performance analysis.

  • Experience with caching technologies such as Redis or similar platforms.

  • Experience working on platform engineering, developer platform, or internal developer experience initiatives.

  • Experience with NoSQL technologies and modern data platform architectures.

  • Experience evaluating emerging technologies and establishing engineering best practices.
