Engineer Lab Manager information

What is an engineer lab manager?

Engineer Lab Managers are professionals who oversee the daily operations of engineering laboratories. They ensure that lab equipment is maintained, supervise staff and researchers, enforce safety protocols, and manage budgets and inventory. Their role often includes coordinating experiments, supporting research and development projects, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Effective communication and organizational skills are essential, as they serve as a link between engineers, technicians, and management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineer lab manager?

To thrive as an Engineer Lab Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, laboratory management experience, and usually a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with lab management software, safety protocols, and quality standards such as ISO/IEC 17025 is typically required. Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills help you manage teams, delegate tasks, and ensure smooth lab operations. These skills and qualifications are essential to maintain high-quality research, ensure safety compliance, and achieve project goals efficiently.

What are some common challenges faced by engineer lab managers in maintaining efficient laboratory operations?

Engineer Lab Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing administrative duties with hands-on technical work, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards, and coordinating equipment maintenance or calibration. They must also manage a diverse team of engineers and technicians, which requires strong communication and leadership skills. Additionally, adapting to rapidly changing technologies and project priorities can be demanding, making effective organizational skills essential for success in this role.

THE ROLE:

We are seeking a hands-on and detail-oriented professional to support and maintain our development lab environment. This role is responsible for ensuring that lab systems, hardware, and infrastructure are fully operational, organized, and accessible to support engineering and development teams. The ideal candidate will provide day-to-day technical support, troubleshoot hardware and system issues, and coordinate closely with IT and engineering teams to resolve problems efficiently.

THE PERSON:

In this role, you will manage lab setup and organization, maintain accurate inventory and asset tracking, and support the full lifecycle of lab systems—from configuration and deployment to refresh and decommissioning. You will play a key role in enabling developer productivity by maintaining reliable lab operations, supporting remote access needs, and ensuring systems are properly configured, updated, and compliant with internal standards.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working hands-on with hardware, solving technical problems, and contributing to a well-organized, high-functioning lab environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Developer support and troubleshooting

  • Provide first line troubleshooting for modern PCs, Windows systems, GPUs, drivers, peripherals, and common lab setup issues
  • Support remote developers by performing configuration changes in the lab, such as swapping hardware, updating BIOS settings, re imaging systems, and validating connectivity
  • Triage issues, document symptoms and steps taken, and escalate effectively to IT, vendors, or engineering owners when needed

Lab setup and organization

  • Set up, organize, and maintain the debug labs including physical layout planning, labeling, and standards for cleanliness and safety
  • Establish and document lab operating procedures, including check in check out, access rules, escalation paths, and how to request support
  • Support office relocation activities for lab spaces, including planning, packing, moving coordination, and bringing systems back online quickly

Inventory and asset management

  • Create and maintain an inventory system for lab assets such as desktops, servers, GPUs, capture cards, peripherals, test equipment, and cables
  • Track ownership, location, status, RMA, and lifecycle stage of each asset
  • Run periodic audits and reconcile gaps, missing items, and end of life equipment

System lifecycle and IT coordination

  • Compare current lab systems against the latest relevant test and development platforms and recommend refresh plans based on developer needs, cost effectiveness and market trends
  • Work with IT to ensure lab systems meet security and compliance requirements and are correctly imaged, patched, and enrolled where required
  • Coordinate network, storage, access control, and remote access solutions so developers can use lab resources reliably

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hands-on experience working with computer hardware or technical lab environments
  • Experience with assembling PC systems and open-bench hardware platforms including OS imaging, networking basics, BIOS flashing and hardware troubleshooting
  • Experience maintaining large system farms and using remote access solutions
  • Experience managing file servers or storage systems
  • Experience using hardware inventory or asset management tools
  • Basic Linux system administration experience (bash, ssh, command line tools)
  • SQL/Database knowledge is a plus
  • Scripting and Python knowledge

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Network Engineering or Information Systems

LOCATION: Secaucus, NJ

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
