What is an engineer in training?

An Engineer In Training (EIT) is an individual who has completed the educational requirements for an engineering degree and has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. EITs are typically early-career engineers working under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers (PEs) to gain the experience required for full licensure. This designation is an important step toward becoming a Professional Engineer and demonstrates a foundational knowledge of engineering principles. EITs are often involved in various engineering tasks, such as design, analysis, and project management, as they build their skills and experience.

What types of projects and tasks can an engineer in training expect to work on during their first year?

As an Engineer In Training (EIT), you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects that support senior engineers, such as assisting with design calculations, preparing technical reports, conducting site visits, and helping with project documentation. You'll likely rotate through different teams or departments to gain exposure to various engineering disciplines and workflows. Collaboration is key, as you'll frequently work alongside experienced engineers, drafters, and project managers, gaining valuable feedback and mentorship. This hands-on experience helps build your technical skills and prepares you for greater responsibility as you progress toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineer in training, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineer In Training, you need a solid background in engineering principles, analytical thinking, and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Familiarity with technical tools such as CAD software, modeling programs, and project management systems is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities help you effectively collaborate with senior engineers and stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are crucial for building technical competence, contributing to projects, and progressing toward professional engineering licensure.

What is the difference between Engineer In Training vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectEngineer In TrainingMechanical Engineer
CredentialsPassed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examTypically holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering; may have passed the FE exam
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, supervised roles in design, analysis, or testingDesign, develop, and analyze mechanical systems; more independent responsibilities
Usage in IndustryInitial certification for licensure; often a stepping stoneLicensed Professional Engineer (PE) often required for advanced roles

The main difference is that an Engineer In Training is an entry-level credential after passing the FE exam, serving as a stepping stone toward becoming a licensed Mechanical Engineer. Mechanical Engineers typically have more experience, responsibilities, and may pursue licensure for higher-level roles.

Job description

Job Title: Facilities Mechanical Engineer (Mission-Critical Infrastructure)
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Facilities Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical design and integration for large-scale, high-complexity industrial facilities. You will be responsible for the design of robust utility and infrastructure systems that support mission-critical manufacturing, testing, and development operations.
This is a fast-paced role for an engineer who thrives on "the hard stuff"-retrofitting existing complex facilities, integrating new high-capacity equipment, and solving the unique mechanical challenges that arise in advanced production environments. You will partner with stakeholders, multidisciplinary engineering teams, and contractors to bring design concepts through construction and final commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design & Engineering
• System Design: Design and specify integrated mechanical systems, including HVAC, hydronic loops, high-purity process piping, specialized exhaust, plumbing, and fire protection.
• Infrastructure Upgrades: Lead the design for facility retrofits and equipment expansions. Perform complex engineering calculations, system analysis, and component selection to meet rigorous operational requirements.
• Utility Integration: Develop comprehensive utility requirement packages in collaboration with equipment manufacturers and facility stakeholders.
• Multidisciplinary Coordination: Act as a technical lead within multidisciplinary teams, ensuring mechanical designs are seamlessly integrated with electrical, structural, and architectural systems.
Project & Construction Support
• Technical Documentation: Produce detailed construction documents, installation packages, and engineering reports.
• Lifecycle Support: Interface directly with clients, contractors, and project owners from conceptual design through project closeout.
• Field Engineering: Provide construction-phase support, including the technical review of RFIs, submittals, and the resolution of field-related engineering issues.
• Compliance: Ensure all designs comply with applicable codes, safety standards, and project-specific technical requirements.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
• Credentialing: Active Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is required; candidate must be actively pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
• Experience Baseline: Minimum of three (3) years of experience applying mechanical facilities engineering principles in high-complexity industrial or commercial environments.
• Technical Proficiency: Proven track record in HVAC, hydronic systems, process piping, and industrial exhaust/infrastructure.
Preferred Attributes
• Hands-on field experience within a large-scale industrial facility.
• Technical proficiency with AutoCAD and Navisworks (for clash coordination and spatial integration).
• Excellent analytical and troubleshooting abilities; comfort working in a dynamic, multidisciplinary project environment.
• Passion for complex building systems and a commitment to engineering excellence.
