What is an engineer coordinator?

Engineer Coordinators are professionals responsible for overseeing and managing engineering projects, ensuring all aspects are coordinated among different teams and stakeholders. They handle project scheduling, resource allocation, communication between departments, and monitor the progress of engineering tasks to meet deadlines and quality standards. Their role is crucial in bridging the gap between technical staff, management, and clients, ensuring that projects run smoothly and efficiently. Engineer Coordinators often possess strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineer coordinator?

To thrive as an Engineer Coordinator, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with project management software, CAD tools, and industry-specific systems is typically required. Exceptional organizational, leadership, and communication skills set outstanding candidates apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for efficiently coordinating engineering teams, managing complex projects, and ensuring successful project delivery.

How does an engineer coordinator typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

As an Engineer Coordinator, you’ll regularly serve as a bridge between engineering teams and other departments such as project management, procurement, and quality assurance. Your role often involves facilitating communication, aligning project timelines, and ensuring that technical requirements are clearly understood by all stakeholders. You may organize meetings, track progress, and address any issues that arise to keep everyone on the same page. This collaborative environment helps drive projects forward efficiently and ensures deliverables meet both technical and business objectives.

What is the difference between Engineer Coordinator vs Engineer Technician?

AspectEngineer CoordinatorEngineer Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; often some project management experienceAssociate's degree or technical certification in engineering technology
Work EnvironmentOffice-based, coordinating projects, liaising with teams and clientsField or lab settings, performing technical tasks and equipment maintenance
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, construction, manufacturingManufacturing plants, construction sites, technical service providers

The main difference between an Engineer Coordinator and an Engineer Technician lies in their focus and responsibilities. The Engineer Coordinator primarily manages project coordination, schedules, and communication, requiring a background in engineering and some management skills. In contrast, the Engineer Technician focuses on technical tasks, equipment operation, and hands-on support, often with technical certifications. Both roles are essential in engineering projects but serve different functions within the industry.

How much does an engineer coordinator make?

The average salary for an engineer coordinator typically ranges from $60,000 to $90,000 per year, depending on experience, location, and industry. Salaries may also include benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans, and the role often requires strong organizational and technical skills.

Job description

Overview

The Engineering Coordinator is a key member of the Engineering Management Team (EMT) at Quality Electrical Systems. This role owns sprint governance and cross-discipline coordination for Electrical Engineering (EE) and Mechanical Engineering (ME) teams, ensuring engineering work flows efficiently from intake through delivery.

Reporting to the Engineering Integration Manager, this position operates at the intersection of engineering execution and project management. The Engineering Coordinator protects engineering capacity, drives sprint discipline, and serves as the primary interface between Operations Project Managers and the engineering organization, ensuring engineers remain focused on engineering activities while supporting on-time project execution.

This role is instrumental in maintaining sprint health, coordinating engineering deliverables, supporting engineering change processes, and driving continuous improvement initiatives within a fast-paced Engineer-to-Order (ETO) manufacturing environment.

Enforce sprint capacity governance by locking committed work before each sprint begins and protecting engineering resources from unplanned interruptions.

Maintain and improve sprint governance documentation, swim lanes, and RASIC artifacts as engineering processes mature.

Track and report sprint velocity, on-time delivery (OTD) contribution metrics, and engineering capacity utilization.

Engineering Coordination & Project Support

Coordinate cross-functional deliverables between Electrical and Mechanical Engineering teams.

Ensure BOM milestone completion and tracking at established project milestones (30%, 65%, and 95%).

Partner with Operations Project Managers to resolve capacity conflicts and route escalations appropriately.
