In this context, Spellman High Voltage Electronics Corp. is seeking a highly talented, motivated, creative, and experienced Sr. Engineering in the field of Power Electronics, Power Management and Digital Controls technologies and applications, to include development, testing and validation. This position allows the candidate to advance the power electronics technology roadmap that both supports the existing company product line and enables expansion for the next generation products. The successful candidate must be able to work independently on new power electronics concepts (advanced development) which can be demonstrated to be mass produced while also supporting on-going customer product development activities as needed. She/He must have knowledge in power electronics & Controls (PID) design and simulation. The ability to design and develop products from high level requirements. Professional experience in power supplies, Inverters, DC-DC converters, Magnetics, and high voltage technologies is a definite plus. Further, in this role, soft skills, coaching and mentoring, are all key requirements to be successful.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical

  • Product design working from high level requirements.
  • Responsibilities range from designing, developing power conversion and control circuits, modeling/simulations, component selection, bread-boarding, testing, troubleshooting, problem solving, system integration and reporting results.
  • Product architecture development to enable robust solutions.
  • Detailed circuit design and analysis to enable reliability and producibility.
  • Project Planning for applied technology development needs.
  • Interface with peers in the Engineering team to implement features desired as described in product and application requirements.
  • Support the review and interpretation of internal/external customer requirements.
Desired Knowledge/Skill Requirements

Background in Power Electronics topologies, and digital control using PID control loops, and applications that implement Silicon Carbide, Gallium Nitride, or Silicon Devices. Excellent understanding of semiconductor non-idealities, losses, and loss modelling. High level circuit simulation/analysis, testing and debugging. Demonstrated ability to investigate, design and develop power electronics hardware in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to multitask while delivering excellent results in a multi-priority environment. Strong command of fundamental concepts such as thermal dynamics, controls, power conversion topologies, noise immunity and EMC. Provide detailed written design theory and design documentation. Verbal and technical language proficiency in English. Provide detailed cost analysis versus performance gains. Provide detailed design verification reports, MTBF, DFX, Life Cycle Performance. Skilled using laboratory test & measurement equipment. Strong knowledge in power electronics simulations tools (PSPICE, Matlab / Simulink and others). Strong understanding of schematics and PCB layout. General competency in all core fields (power conversion, electronics, electromagnetics, controls hardware, firmware and software). Excellent problem definition and solving techniques as well as good organization and documentation abilities. Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others: Envision the Future. Communicate Honestly and Broadly. Participate in and contribute to strategic discussions regarding products, markets, and technology/product road-mapping. Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer contract requirements and applicable specifications (industry standards and homologation requirements). Lead and oversee product design reviews and provide applicable approval for design changes, specifications. Ensure compliance with all Spellman and other governing security regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

1/ Critical Requirements for this role include the following:

  • BS degree with minimum 8 years of relevant experience or MS degree with 5+ years of experience or PhD with 3+ years of experience preferred, in Electrical Engineering with specific focus on: PID (Proportional-Integral-Differential) controls design and implementation including hardware, software and firmware;
  • Power Electronics converter design, modeling, build and test;
  • In-depth knowledge of the physics of semiconductor technologies (active and passive components) including SiC and GaN for power conversion;
  • In-depth knowledge of analog circuit design;
  • In-depth knowledge of magnetics and design principles;
  • Expertise in multi-physics simulations: Controls+Electro-Thermo-Mechanical system modeling in the field of modern power electronics;
  • In-depth expertise of advanced prognostic and health monitoring as applied to power electronics is a must.

Our good faith estimate of the salary range for this role is $127,000 - $179,000. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and other factors. In addition to base pay, we offer a full benefits package.

This position requires on-site presence at Spellman High Voltage headquarters in Hauppauge, NY.

Excellent task management skills and knowledge of other engineering design and analysis tools in the field of power conversion, power management, digital and analog control.
