Description

 Excel Engineering, Inc. is seeking a team-oriented, highly motivated Senior Automation & Controls Engineer for our Greenville, South Carolina office. We offer Professional Technical Services to our Clients in the US and abroad. This position works closely with other engineers, project managers, and Client team members in support of both capital and operational improvement projects. 


This position requires implementing sound engineering principles to ensure project designs are safe and at the industry's cutting edge. An ability to work independently, self-motivate, and communicate effectively with team members is of the utmost importance to this position.

In this position, this person will be managing and executing assigned projects from Firm Leadership. This will include coordinating with end-users, vendors, contractors, and others to successfully execute and deliver desired results on time and within budget. 


Primary Responsibilities 

  • Creates Programmable Logical Control (PLC) programs and HMI applications from User Requirements or Functional Specifications 
  • Performs loop checks and basic control system checkout tasks. 
  • Configures communication interfaces to other control systems. 
  • Basic understanding of standard instrumentation. 
  • Devises and maintains electrical schematics and piping and instrumentation drawings (P&ID). 
  • Optimizes and tunes automatic control systems utilizing PLCs. 
  • Design electrical packages by laying out I/O, fusing, control panel layouts, bills of material, and cable layouts. 
  • Creates all project documents according to internal processes to ensure that designs meet Client's expectations. 
  • Specify and configure VFD and Servo drives for applications. 
  • Performs system validation according to scope documentation and project requirements. 

Requirements

 Experience 

  • Six (6) - eight (8) years of experience as an industrial control system/automation engineer. 
  • Industrial electrical design experience in the following industries preferred: Consumer Goods, Renewable Energy; Gas Processing, Chemical, Power, Waste Management or Pharmaceutical. 

Education 

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution or equivalent experience is required. 
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 Scale. 

Qualifications 

  • Interest and experience with computer programming are highly preferred. 
  • Exposure to electrical design and calculations. 
  • Exposure to networking (i.e. networking switches, IP addressing, etc.) at the automation level. 
  • Skilled in developing PLC logic, HMI interface logic also exposure to system communications, elementary diagrams, control panel layouts or instrument specifications is preferred. 
  • Exposure to OPC servers and data historians. 
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) registration or ability to obtain such is highly preferred. 
  • Willing to travel up to 20% of the time.
