Position Summary

Mesabi Metallics is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Civil Design Engineer responsible for the planning, design, execution, and successful completion of civil engineering components in large-scale projects within the steel industry. These projects focus on iron ore mining, beneficiation, pelletization, and downstream iron & steel making. The incumbent ensures that all work complies with industry standards, safety regulations, and client requirements throughout the project lifecycle.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage civil engineering activities for projects related to iron ore mining, beneficiation, pelletization, and downstream iron & steel making.
  • Develop and review detailed civil engineering designs, drawings, and specifications for foundations, structures, roads, drainage systems, and other related infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including mechanical, electrical, structural, and environmental engineers to ensure integrated project execution.
  • Prepare and review project schedules, budgets, and resource plans ensuring on-time and within-budget delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including environmental and safety standards.
  • Conduct site inspections, risk assessments, and troubleshooting to resolve technical issues.
  • Prepare project documentation including progress reports, technical reports, and as-built drawings.
  • Collaborate with contractors, vendors, and regulatory authorities.
  • Implement best practices for project management, cost control, and quality assurance.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 7 to 15 years of relevant experience in civil engineering within the steel, mining, or mineral processing industry.
  • Strong experience in iron ore mining projects, beneficiation, pelletization, and downstream iron & steel making.
  • Proficient in engineering design software such as AutoCAD, STAAD Pro, and project management tools.
  • In-depth knowledge of civil construction methods, materials, and standards.
  • Experience with project lifecycle from conceptual design to commissioning.
  • Familiarity with US regulations, codes, and standards (OSHA, EPA, ACI, ASTM, etc.).
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic project environment.
  • PMP or equivalent project management certification.
  • Experience with environmental and sustainability practices in mining/steel projects.
  • Knowledge of soil mechanics, geotechnical investigations, and foundation engineering.
  • Experience with 3D modeling and BIM software.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Experience with contract negotiation and vendor management.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, or related field.

Physical Requirements

  • This position is a mixture of field work and office duties. Field work will be conducted daily throughout the year so exposure to the elements (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc) is to be expected. The office duties will require work in front of a laptop, desk, and phone.

Salary Range:

  • $120,000 - $150,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
