What does an energy storage engineer do?

An Energy Storage Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes energy storage systems such as batteries, flywheels, or thermal storage for applications in renewable energy, grid stability, and electric vehicles. They analyze system performance, improve efficiency, and ensure safety and reliability. Their work involves selecting materials, modeling system behavior, and collaborating with manufacturers and stakeholders to integrate storage solutions effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an energy storage engineer?

To thrive as an Energy Storage Engineer, you need strong knowledge of electrochemistry, energy systems, and engineering principles, typically backed by a degree in electrical, chemical, or mechanical engineering. Experience with modeling software (such as MATLAB or PSCAD), battery management systems, and relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is often expected. Excellent problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills for success in this field. These abilities enable engineers to design innovative storage solutions, ensure system safety and reliability, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by energy storage engineers in their daily work?

Energy Storage Engineers often encounter challenges related to designing systems that balance high performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness. They must stay updated on rapidly evolving technologies, comply with rigorous industry standards, and address integration with existing energy infrastructure. Additionally, troubleshooting unexpected performance issues and coordinating with cross-functional teams—such as project managers, software engineers, and operations staff—are regular parts of the job. Job description

Senior Software Engineer, Energy Storage

This position is on a team building the software platform that powers optimized control and market participation of battery energy storage systems (BESS) - software that runs both on site controllers and in the cloud. Our scope spans the full stack: compute infrastructure, telemetry, asset modeling, alerting, feature ingestion and storage for forecasting and optimization, simulation and operational control orchestration, and integration with energy markets. We're a lean team that holds ourselves to high standards in both the quality of what we build and the speed at which we build it. We value collaboration, trust, learning, and engineering excellence, and we genuinely enjoy building great things together.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Contribute to BESS data engineering - building and maintaining telemetry pipelines and stores, and feature ingestion and storage systems for forecasting and optimization
  • Design, build, and maintain simulation and training infrastructure - platforms for running and orchestrating simulations at scale
  • Develop and operate real-time forecast and optimization workflows, orchestrating pipelines that drive BESS operations
  • Support energy market integration, including data ingestion and bid management
  • Collaborate across the full stack and across team boundaries to ensure the product system works well as a whole
  • Write well-tested, well-monitored software and iteratively improve it over time
  • Apply AI tools to accelerate development while maintaining high system design quality and code standards

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong software design instincts - thinks in systems, reasons from first principles, and understands the real-world challenges of building available, reliable, scalable, and secure distributed systems
  • Comfortable using AI tools to move faster without letting them erode system design or code quality
  • Excellent collaborator - communicates clearly, listens well, and makes the people around them better
  • Bias toward action - takes initiative, makes progress in ambiguous situations, and doesn't wait for perfect information
  • Systems thinker and owner - willing to think and collaborate across team boundaries to make sure the product works well as a whole
  • Rigorous about quality - writes well-tested, well-monitored software and iterates on it over time
  • B.S. or advanced degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or another discipline, combined with 2-5 years of experience in software engineering.
  • Experience with relevant technologies a plus: Kubernetes, Rust, Python, NATS, PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB, SQLite
  • A passion for sustainability and making the world a better place!
