Job description
One of the best college towns and best places to live in the United States, Chapel Hill has diverse social, cultural, recreation, and professional opportunities that span the campus and community.
University employees can choose from a wide range of professional training opportunities for career growth, skill development, and lifelong learning and enjoy exclusive perks for numerous retail, restaurant, and performing arts discounts, savings on local child care centers, and special rates on select campus events. UNC-Chapel Hill offers full-time employees a comprehensive benefits package, paid leave, and a variety of health, life, and retirement plans and additional programs that support a healthy work/life balance.
At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School, we think differently; and more importantly, we teach differently. Opening our doors as the Department of Commerce in 1919 and awarding our first degrees to 12 students in 1921 was the beginning. Today, we have become a top-ranked business school comprised of several professional and academic degree programs that serve over 3,000 students. At Kenan-Flagler, our greatest assets are our people and our culture. We are rooted in our core values of integrity, inclusion, innovation and impact, and it goes back to our founding. It's not just something on paper, we live it, we show it. Our mission is to prepare the next generation of business leaders by providing a world class education to our students. We seek to recruit diverse, innovative, and exceptional talent to achieve this goal.
Position SummaryThe Kenan-Flagler Business School (KFBS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to fill one (1) position as Professor of the Practice in Finance. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and MBA courses and serve as Director of the Energy Center. This dual-role position includes teaching in the MBA Energy Concentration and providing strategic and operational leadership for the Energy Center. The successful candidate will be a creative, innovative, and effective educator who can contribute to the School's undergraduate, full-time MBA, executive MBA, online MBA, and specialized master's programs in the Finance area.
Founded in 2014, the Energy Center is an institute devoted to programming and research in energy public policy and the broader energy sector. The Center works closely with the Energy Concentration, which includes 12 energy-focused courses within the full-time MBA program. Since its founding, the Center has organized major conferences, published reports, supported student research projects, and contributed to UNC's Clean Tech Summit. Additional information about the Center can be found at: https://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/energy-center/about-the-energy-center/.
A key priority for the Center is the continued growth of Kenan-Flagler's Energy MBA program. Distinctive for its 'full value chain' approach and extensive use of practitioner faculty, the program has grown significantly, with energy-focused students now comprising approximately 15% of the full-time MBA program. The Center supports this growth by recruiting prospective students, providing internship and fellowship opportunities, and assisting graduates in securing positions across the energy industry. As Professor of the Practice, the Director will contribute to teaching in the Energy Concentration and help support student recruitment, engagement, and career placement.
The Energy Center is self-funded and supported by an active Advisory Board, with an established operating surplus and emerging endowment. The Director will be responsible for building on this strong foundation by providing leadership to the Advisory Board, advancing programmatic initiatives, and strengthening research and industry engagement. The Director will also lead fundraising efforts to support the Center's continued growth and long-term sustainability.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsApplicants must have completed a relevant post-baccalaureate degree (e.g., master's degree in business, energy, finance, or a related field) prior to beginning work activities. Candidates must also demonstrate a minimum of five (5) years of relevant industry experience, which may include senior operating roles within an energy company or senior roles in energy-related banking, consulting, or other professional services.
Candidates should have familiarity with the full energy value chain and a broad, 'all of the above' perspective on the energy transition, as well as strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills appropriate for leading a high-visibility academic center.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and ExperienceAn advanced degree (e.g., MBA, master's, or doctorate) in business, energy, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with teaching experience, particularly at the graduate level, are also preferred.
