What is an energy office?

An Energy Office is typically a government or organizational department responsible for developing, implementing, and managing energy policies and programs. Its main goals are to promote energy efficiency, support the adoption of renewable energy sources, and ensure reliable and affordable energy supply. The office may also oversee energy conservation initiatives, provide resources and incentives to individuals and businesses, and help set regulatory standards related to energy use. Energy Offices play a key role in advancing sustainability and reducing environmental impacts through strategic planning and public outreach.

What types of projects does someone in an energy office typically work on, and how do they collaborate with other departments?

Professionals in an Energy Office often manage and support projects aimed at improving energy efficiency, implementing renewable energy solutions, and ensuring regulatory compliance. They regularly collaborate with facilities management, engineering teams, procurement, and external vendors to plan and execute initiatives such as energy audits, upgrading building systems, or rolling out sustainability programs. Cross-functional teamwork is essential, as these projects often require coordinating schedules, budgets, and technical requirements across multiple departments. This collaborative environment offers opportunities to develop project management and stakeholder engagement skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an energy officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Energy Officer, you need expertise in energy management, sustainability practices, and regulatory compliance, usually supported by a degree in engineering, environmental science, or a related field. Familiarity with energy auditing tools, building management systems, and certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or LEED accreditation is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, project management, and communication skills help drive energy efficiency initiatives and stakeholder engagement. These skills ensure effective energy conservation, regulatory adherence, and the successful implementation of cost-saving and sustainable energy strategies.

Job Description
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system's 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Office of Energy and Resource Recovery Programs (Energy Office) is charged with plotting the course for DEP to meet its energy and carbon neutrality goals, as well as maximizing resource recovery. The Energy Office also provides energy and performance tracking, program assessment, scientific research, planning and internal auditing services to DEP's operating bureaus.
The Energy Office is seeking to hire an Associate Energy Project Analyst. The selected candidate will manage DCAS-funded projects; perform scientific research and analysis; and provide technical assistance for planning, funding, and implementing projects within the agency. These projects represent critical initiatives to improve efficiency, effectiveness, coordination, and delivery of formalized efforts in support of the agency's climate goals, including energy and carbon neutrality by 2050, zero waste to landfills by 2030, and various renewable energy, energy storage, and energy reliability targets.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
1.Track and report progress on portfolio of projects that have been awarded funding through DCAS ExCEL and ACE programs that provide funding for expense and capital energy saving projects respectively. Tasks include managing grant distribution, aligning grant funding with DEP's budget, tracking expenditures, submitting milestone documentation, verifying installations and supporting pre and post-installation measurement and verification efforts.
2.Identify potential projects and generate applications based on potential energy savings to DCAS ACE and ExCEL programs in order to secure external funding for DEP projects.
3.Assist project managers as needed to advance priority projects, including developing and maintaining project plans, managing and coordinating project elements, reviewing milestones, and ensuring efficient progress on implementation through consistent monitoring of initiatives and commitments.
4.Provide analytical assistance, including quantitative and qualitative data analysis; data tool creation and maintenance; technical research and evaluation of industry and internal best practices in energy, demand, performance, and greenhouse gas management; and the identification and assessment of operational improvement opportunities. Instruct junior staff and energy bureau liaisons on the ACE and ExCEL application process.
5.Support procurement and documentation of projects that receive funding through DCAS' Retro-commissioning program.
6.Assist senior staff in project management responsibilities, including adhering to internal and external timelines; ensuring the completion of high-quality deliverables; and managing budgets.
7.Participate in ad-hoc projects as needed.
