Position Description

The Energy Engineer performs specialized engineering analysis, building energy modeling, decarbonization studies, and technical evaluations for commercial and multifamily energy efficiency projects across utility incentive programs. The role requires application of mechanical engineering principles including thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, HVAC systems, and building energy performance analysis. The position involves use of advanced engineering software and analytical tools to evaluate energy savings, system performance, cost effectiveness, electrification opportunities, and code compliance for complex building systems.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field required
• Master’s degree in Engineering Management, Technology Management, or related technical field may be preferred
• Knowledge of HVAC systems, building mechanical systems, and energy efficiency technologies
• Experience with building energy modeling and engineering analysis tools
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and energy codes

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform technical reviews and engineering evaluations for commercial and multifamily energy efficiency incentive applications submitted through utility programs including Energy Trust of Oregon, SoCalGas public and commercial sector energy programs
• Develop and review whole-building energy models using engineering simulation software including EnergyPlus, IESVE, and eQuest
• Perform whole-building energy modeling and savings analysis in accordance with ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G methodologies
• Perform engineering calculations to determine projected energy savings, equipment performance, thermal loads, and cost effectiveness for energy efficiency measures
• Utilize engineering tools including CET and utility cost-effectiveness tools to evaluate electric and gas savings, lifecycle performance metrics, and incentive eligibility
• Conduct decarbonization studies for commercial and multifamily buildings to evaluate electrification opportunities, energy reduction strategies, and building system upgrades
• Perform engineering-based energy audits to assess existing building performance, HVAC systems, energy consumption patterns, and energy conservation opportunities
• Analyze HVAC systems, VRF systems, heat pumps, ERVs, water heating systems, and other building mechanical systems using engineering methodologies
• Review mechanical plans, specifications, schedules, submittals, and technical documentation for compliance with utility program requirements and applicable energy codes
• Interpret and apply ASHRAE standards, building energy codes, and technical reference manuals during engineering reviews and energy analysis
• Apply engineering principles related to thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and building systems performance to evaluate proposed energy conservation measures
• Provide technical guidance and engineering support to outreach managers, internal teams, and project stakeholders regarding engineering calculations, energy modeling methodologies, and technical program requirements
• Support quality assurance reviews and provide technical oversight and mentoring assistance to junior engineers and technical reviewers
• Prepare technical documentation, engineering findings, savings calculations, and technical recommendations for internal and external stakeholders
• Exercise independent engineering judgment in evaluating complex building systems, electrification opportunities, and energy efficiency strategies

Technical Skills

• Building energy modeling software including EnergyPlus, IESVE, and eQuest

Nature of Work

Approximately 70–80% of duties involve application of mechanical engineering principles, building energy simulation, technical analysis, engineering calculations, decarbonization analysis, and evaluation of complex commercial building systems. The position requires independent technical judgment and specialized engineering knowledge to assess energy efficiency measures, calculate energy savings, evaluate electrification opportunities, and support utility energy efficiency program implementation.
