Energy accounting is the process of tracking, analyzing, and reporting the consumption and costs of energy within an organization or facility. It involves collecting data on energy use from various sources, such as electricity, natural gas, and water meters, and using this information to identify trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for cost savings. Energy accounting helps organizations manage their energy usage more effectively, reduce waste, and improve sustainability. It is an essential component of energy management and reporting for compliance and operational efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an energy accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Energy Accountant, you need a strong background in accounting principles, energy industry knowledge, and a relevant degree such as accounting, finance, or a related field. Familiarity with specialized energy accounting software (like SAP, Quorum, or Enertia), proficiency in Excel, and sometimes certifications like CPA are highly valuable. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for interpreting complex data and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and informed decision-making within the dynamic energy sector.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in energy accounting, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in Energy Accounting often face challenges related to managing complex data from multiple sources, staying current with evolving regulations, and reconciling discrepancies between operational and financial records. To address these, energy accountants use specialized software to track and verify transactions, collaborate closely with engineering and operations teams, and participate in ongoing training to keep up with industry standards. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential for ensuring accurate reporting and compliance.

4. Enterprise Partnership, Governance & Execution

Partner across Sustainability, Manufacturing, Facilities, EHS, Procurement, Finance, Legal, and other business functions to integrate clean energy considerations into capital planning, operational strategies, and climate-related decision-making. The role provides enterprise governance, strategic guidance, and external representation on energy matters, helping ensure successful implementation of Baxter's clean energy strategy while maintaining alignment with business priorities and stakeholder expectations.

What you'll bring

  • Demonstrated strength in:
