What does an endpoint security engineer do?

An Endpoint Security Engineer is responsible for securing an organization's endpoints, including desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and servers. They implement, monitor, and manage security solutions such as antivirus software, endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools, and access controls. Their primary goal is to protect endpoints from cyber threats, malware, and unauthorized access. They also collaborate with IT and security teams to develop policies, respond to incidents, and ensure compliance with security frameworks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an endpoint security engineer?

Success as an Endpoint Security Engineer requires a solid understanding of cybersecurity principles, endpoint protection, and threat detection, often backed by a degree in computer science, cybersecurity, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as antivirus/EDR solutions (e.g., CrowdStrike, Carbon Black), SIEM platforms, scripting languages, and certifications like CompTIA Security+ or CISSP are frequently expected. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and a proactive attitude help engineers collaborate across IT teams and respond swiftly to security incidents. These competencies are vital for staying ahead of evolving threats and ensuring robust protection of organizational endpoints.

What are some common challenges faced by endpoint security engineers in their day-to-day work?

Endpoint Security Engineers often encounter challenges such as staying updated with rapidly evolving threat landscapes, ensuring consistent security policy enforcement across various device types, and balancing robust protection with user productivity. They may need to troubleshoot endpoint agents, respond to incident alerts, and work closely with IT and helpdesk teams to remediate vulnerabilities or outbreaks. Additionally, they often manage deployment of security patches and educate users on best practices. Addressing these challenges requires a combination of technical expertise, adaptability, and strong communication to keep endpoints and sensitive data secure.

Job description

At Facility Management Planners (FMP), we design and implement evolutionary solutions for physical and virtual convergence, allowing for workplaces to be more comfortable, sustainable, and engaging. Following our merger with ADSI, we operate a combined IT environment that includes an on-site data center, and we are building a new Generative AI practice.

This role sits at the center of both: you will help run the corporate IT environment that keeps our business moving, and help build and operate the AWS cloud platform behind our AI work.

About the Role

This is a dual-mandate infrastructure role. 50% of your time is spent on our AWS cloud platform - supporting the environment where our AI solution is built, working alongside our AWS implementation partner, and taking on more ownership of that platform over time. The other 50% supports our IT team's daily operations across Windows Server, SQL Server, virtualization and VDI, SAN storage, Fortinet security, and Microsoft 365.

If you have a solid systems and network administration foundation and you want to grow into cloud and AI platform engineering without leaving hands-on infrastructure work behind, this role is built for that. You will learn a modern AWS AI stack on a real production system, with support from an experienced implementation partner and an internal advisory team — and you will be the person who owns it going forward.

We are looking for individuals that carry characteristics that are:

  • Inquisitive Learning Mindset
  • Self-Driven
  • Organized
  • Inspirational Leadership
  • Proactive
  • Analytical Problem-Solving

Responsibilities

AI & AWS Cloud Platform (~50%)

  • Help manage and support the AWS cloud environment where our AI solution runs along with other production workloads.
  • Work closely with our AWS implementation partner: learn the full solution architecture and the AWS services in use, and grow into owning that environment as the project matures.
  • Monitor the AI ingestion pipeline: data ingestion, processing, and search indexing - keeping throughput and reliability on target.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues, failures, and outages across the platform.
  • Support cloud cost management: resource tagging, budget alerts, and usage trending to keep spend predictable.
  • Build and maintain monitoring dashboards and alerts using CloudWatch and related AWS services.
  • Write and maintain clear infrastructure documentation, runbooks, and configuration records.

Network Administration & IT Operations (~50%)

  • Provide added capacity to our IT team's daily operations: incident response, escalated support tickets, change execution, and routine maintenance.
  • Administer and maintain Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
  • Manage and support SQL Server databases for performance, security, and availability.
  • Support Apache / Tomcat web applications.
  • Deploy, configure, and maintain VMware vSphere and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments.
  • Monitor and manage Nimble SAN storage for performance and capacity planning.
  • Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot Fortinet firewalls, Fortinet EMS, and Fortinet SIEM.
  • Administer Microsoft Exchange (cloud) and support Office 365 services including Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive.
  • Manage Microsoft Intune for device compliance, application deployment, and endpoint security.
  • Implement and maintain backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of systems, configurations, and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in IT infrastructure, systems, or network administration.
  • Strong working knowledge of Windows Server and Active Directory.
  • Experience with SQL Server administration and performance tuning.
  • Proficiency with VMware and VDI technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with SAN storage (Nimble or comparable).
  • Solid understanding of firewall and endpoint security solutions (Fortinet firewalls and EMS, or comparable).
  • Experience administering Microsoft Exchange, Intune, and Office 365.
  • Working familiarity with AWS — comfortable operating in a cloud environment (compute, storage, networking, and IAM) and eager to go deeper.
  • Genuine appetite for learning unfamiliar technology quickly and documenting it for others.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to balance project work with day-to-day operational support, and to work independently as well as part of a team.

Value Add Qualifications:

  • Deeper AWS experience, especially with AI/ML or serverless services (Bedrock, OpenSearch, Textract, Lambda, Step Functions, S3).
  • Exposure to document processing, OCR, or search / vector indexing pipelines.
  • Infrastructure-as-Code or CI/CD experience (CloudFormation, CDK, or Terraform).
  • Experience bridging on-premises and cloud environments (hybrid connectivity, identity federation, VPN).
  • Familiarity with Archibus or comparable enterprise facilities / asset management platforms.
  • Security- and compliance-aware configuration in a regulated environment

Value Add Certifications:

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect, SysOps Administrator, or DevOps Engineer.
  • Microsoft Certified: Windows Server / Exchange / 365 Administrator.
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP).
  • Fortinet NSE Certification.
  • CompTIA Network+ / Security+.
