What is an EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) specialist?

EMI specialists are professionals who analyze, identify, and mitigate issues related to electromagnetic interference in electronic devices and systems. Their work ensures that electronic equipment operates correctly without causing or being affected by unwanted electromagnetic signals. They often collaborate with engineers during the design and testing phases to ensure compliance with regulatory standards for electromagnetic compatibility. EMI specialists use specialized equipment to detect interference sources and recommend solutions such as shielding, filtering, or redesigning circuits.

How does an EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) engineer collaborate with other teams during product development?

As an EMI Engineer, you’ll work closely with design, hardware, and manufacturing teams to identify and mitigate interference issues early in the development cycle. Collaboration often involves reviewing schematics, participating in design reviews, and conducting pre-compliance testing with cross-functional teams. Effective communication is essential, as you'll need to explain complex EMI concepts to non-specialists and coordinate solutions that balance performance, cost, and regulatory requirements. This teamwork ensures that products meet both internal standards and external compliance regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) engineer?

To thrive as an EMI Engineer, a strong background in electrical engineering, circuit design, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) principles is essential, often requiring a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with EMC testing equipment, simulation tools like CST or Ansys HFSS, and relevant certifications such as iNARTE EMC Engineer are typically used in this role. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills to excel in diagnosing and mitigating interference issues. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure electronic products meet regulatory standards and function reliably in various environments.

Job description

To help achieve these efforts, Stratolaunch is seeking a Sr. Engineering Technician with specialized EMI/EMC experience to support the design, integration, testing, and maintenance of hypersonic vehicles electrical and avionics systems. This role will focus on operating EMI/EMC test equipment and performing various types of EMI testing, including radiated and conducted emissions, as well as immunity tests. You will also create shop definitions, including drawings, wiring diagrams, and work instructions, and serve as a liaison to the shop for installation and modification of aircraft subsystems. Successful candidates will have an aerospace background and relevant experience in aerospace systems integration and EMI/EMC testing.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform Environmental Testing including EMI/EMC Testing

  • Operate EMI/EMC test equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzers, antennas, LISNs, signal generators).
  • Conduct radiated and conducted emissions and immunity testing per applicable standards (MIL-STD-461, FCC, CISPR, IEC 61000).
  • Execute pre-compliance and full compliance EMI/EMC testing to support product development and certification.
  • Support other environmental test efforts including thermal, vibration, and shock testing as required.
  • Document and analyze test results, prepare reports, and recommend corrective actions.

Support Avionics and Electrical Systems

  • Act as the engineering liaison to troubleshoot electrical, avionics, and EMI/EMC ground test issues.
  • Design, manufacture, and operate electrical ground support equipment, including EMI/EMC test setups.
  • Create drawings, wiring diagrams, and work instructions for installation or modification of electrical/avionics subsystems.

Technical Communication and Integration

  • Provide real-time support on the shop floor for documentation and technical troubleshooting.
  • Communicate regularly and comprehensively with your lead and cross-functional teams.
  • Contribute to the integration and validation of complex aerospace systems, with emphasis on EMI/EMC compliance.

Travel and Professionalism

  • Travel as needed (<5%) to support department and test activities.
  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity, and fulfillment of commitments.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with EMI/EMC testing, including operation of EMI/EMC test equipment and interpretation of test results.
  • Knowledge of emission (radiated/conducted) and immunity (radiated/conducted) testing principles and standards.
  • Experience integrating launch vehicle or aircraft electrical power systems.
  • Experience with the creation of shop work instructions, wiring diagrams, and drawings.
  • Direct hands-on experience with aircraft electrical system installation and best practices.
  • Ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks to fit business goals.
  • Experience with complex aerospace system development.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Environmental testing experience (thermal, vibration, etc.).
  • Security clearance.
  • Experience with specialized EMI/EMC test techniques (e.g., Time-Domain Scan, Real-Time Scan).

Required Computer Skills:

  • Wiring diagram tools: Siemens Capital Logic/Harness, or equivalent.
  • Lab equipment: Oscilloscopes, multimeters, AC/DC power supplies, signal generators.
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD.

Preferred Computer Skills:

  • Siemens Capital/Mentor Graphics.
  • 3D CAD modeling experience - NX, CATIA, or Solidworks.
  • Curtiss-Wright IADS or Labview.
  • Familiarity with configuration management systems - Jira (preferred).
