Job description

EMH&T is currently looking for a Rodman to join our Survey team based in our Columbus, OH office.

This full-time role assists survey operations in the field under the direction of a Survey Crew Chief or a Survey Instrument Operator. You will be responsible for staking out and elevating survey points. The Rodman may perform maintenance of certain equipment and maintain adequate supplies.

EMH&T has the largest survey team in Central Ohio. Using Windows Mobile data collectors, conventional, servo and robotic instruments, geodetic GPS receivers (including real-time Kinematic surveying), our crews are equipped with the knowledge and the tools for every kind of horizontal and vertical land survey need.

All EMH&T field personnel are subject to our safety-sensitive testing program. This means that your name will be placed in a pool for random screenings after your program training is completed. Details of the program are available to you prior to acceptance of the offer.

Responsibilities

  • Stakes out and elevates survey points.
  • Performs maintenance of certain equipment and maintains supplies for the survey crew. Will be given direction and will assist with other various field duties in the process of data collection.
  • Manages equipment and supplies to and from the work vehicles such as stakes, pins, paint, poles, etc. Carry and deliver supplies to the site.
  • Assist in running level rod or prism pole for grading stakes for the purpose of obtaining elevations to help measure distance.
  • May be asked to assist with other physical efforts required to complete a land survey at the development site, such as clearing brush from the ground.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No prior experience needed.
  • Possible overtime and occasional work out of town and/or overnight.

Physical Requirements:

  • The ability to work outdoors all year in all types of weather conditions. Exposure to poisonous plants, outdoor insects, and allergens is likely.
  • The ability to walk and stand for most of the workday.
  • The ability to maneuver over rough, uneven terrain, ditches, roadsides, etc., while carrying 40-50 lbs. of supplies or robotic equipment weighing 35 lbs.
  • The stamina to work up to 10-12 hours per day for 6-8 months of the work year.
  • Capable of using a 4-lb. up to a 12-lb. sledgehammer to pound wooden stakes or metal pins into the ground. Hammering consumes an inconsistent portion of the workday from 2 hours to 8 hours a day and other days, there is no hammering needed.
  • Intermittent bending and squatting is required while hammering stakes, setting up equipment and/or clearing vegetation.
  • The ability to lift and set aside 60-100-lb. manholes using manhole hooks.
  • Capable of using a machete, brush hook, or other tool to cut light brush.
  • Capable of wearing hearing protection when working near heavy traffic and highways, hard hat if required, and clothing appropriate for the weather. No short pants allowed.
