Emergency Scribes and Medical Scribes both assist healthcare providers by documenting patient encounters. Emergency Scribes work specifically in emergency departments, handling rapid documentation in high-stress situations. Medical Scribes work across a broader range of healthcare settings, often in outpatient or primary care environments. While both roles require knowledge of medical terminology, Emergency Scribes are trained to handle the fast-paced emergency setting, making their skills more specialized for urgent care documentation.

What are the most common challenges faced by Emergency Scribes during busy shifts, and how can they effectively manage them?

Emergency Scribes often face challenges such as keeping up with the fast-paced environment, accurately documenting patient encounters in real time, and adapting to rapidly changing situations. To manage these challenges, it's important to stay organized, maintain clear communication with physicians and staff, and develop efficient documentation habits. Proactively asking questions and being adaptable can also help scribes ensure accuracy and improve their workflow during high-pressure situations.

What are emergency scribes?

Emergency scribes are trained professionals who assist physicians and other healthcare providers in emergency departments by documenting patient encounters in real-time. They enter information into electronic medical records, track test results, and help ensure accurate and efficient documentation. This support allows healthcare providers to focus more on patient care and less on administrative tasks, improving workflow and patient outcomes in fast-paced emergency settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Emergency Scribe, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Emergency Scribe, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, excellent typing skills, and at least a high school diploma, with many employers preferring candidates pursuing healthcare careers. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and documentation software is typically required. Strong attention to detail, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for accurately capturing patient encounters in a fast-paced environment. These skills ensure precise documentation, support efficient clinical workflows, and enhance patient care quality in emergency settings.

Job description

When you apply, you will be prompted to upload your resume. To enhance your application, we strongly encourage you to also to upload your unofficial college transcript and a typing test (typingtest.com).
Emergency Care Consultants (ECC) started their scribe program in 2006 as the first scribe organization in the Midwest. During the program's lifetime ECC has helped start numerous scribe programs throughout the Midwest. We aim to provide our scribes with the richest opportunity to explore the different areas of medicine before they attend any health professional school. As of today, we have seven emergency departments (ranging from urban to rural), outpatient clinics, and inpatient hospital settings where we staff scribes in the Twin Cities, MN.

As a scribe with ECC, you will have the ability to work side-by-side with physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, as well as numerous other medical staff. You will learn how to document a chart, master medical terminology, learn how to read lab values and radiology imaging, watch numerous patient encounters, and so much more. We also provide opportunities outside of scribing including education sessions, practice interviews, volunteer and leadership opportunities, and social events.
Additional Information
Part-Time: ECC's part-time scribe position is designed for the students who are still in undergrad and looking to gain exposure into the medical field. Part-time commitment is two years and will work a minimum of 8 shifts per month (2-3 shifts/week).
Unfortunately, we do not hire for summer only positions.
Shift Description: Most shifts last an average of 8-9 hours each with a balance of days, evenings, nights and weekends. The schedule is flexible! Many of our scribes are currently in school, studying for the MCAT, or applying to school while working for ECC. ECC takes pride in making sure students academics are not conflicting with the schedule. Students are never scheduled to work during class time or exams.
We consider candidates on a rolling basis-- we do not wait until a position expires to begin reviewing candidates' application materials. We recommend applying early as we are very flexible with our starting dates and commonly hire 1-3+ months out.
Education
This position is reserved for those working towards a career in the pre-health track. Sophomore in college or higher preferred.
Qualifications
No medical experience is required! 1:1 training, paid training provided.
A Scribe must be able to work in a team-based environment under stressful conditions, have an upbeat attitude at all times, a willingness to be challenged, a hunger to achieve, and the ability to work well with others. You will encounter patients from all walks of life here, and a non-judgmental attitude is essential.
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age with a HS Diploma.
GPA of 3.0 or higher, computer proficiency (typing speed >60 wpm), and knowledge of medical terminology strongly preferred.
Benefits
  • Paid Time Off
  • Paid Training
  • Flexible Schedule
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Hired candidates may be eligible to receive additional compensation in the form of on-call pay, holiday pay, overtime pay, and annual pay increases.
