How much do emergency preparedness jobs pay per year?
What is emergency preparedness?
Is it hard to get hired by FEMA?
What is the difference between Emergency Preparedness vs Emergency Management?
| Aspect | Emergency Preparedness | Emergency Management |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Planning and training to prepare for emergencies | Coordinating response and recovery efforts during and after emergencies |
| Certifications | CPR, First Aid, CERT, ICS certifications | ICS, NIMS, FEMA certifications |
| Work Environment | Community, corporate, or government settings focusing on preparedness activities | Operational response teams, government agencies, disaster response scenarios |
Emergency Preparedness involves developing plans and training to ensure readiness for emergencies, while Emergency Management encompasses the overall coordination, response, and recovery efforts during and after emergencies. Both roles often collaborate but focus on different stages of disaster management.
What Are Emergency Preparedness Jobs?
Emergency preparedness jobs focus on helping coordinate public safety efforts during a disaster or another crisis. These roles can take place at a variety of levels, from managing the evacuation of a hospital to overseeing the response to a major earthquake, wildfire, or hurricane. Many emergency preparedness jobs are found with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), but organizations in sensitive areas often hire people to create preparedness plans, ensure staff are trained, and verify that all procedures follow relevant state and federal regulations. The duties of an emergency preparedness job vary based on where you work and the area or site you are expected to manage. Individual buildings may only have one or two employees, while the city, county, state, and federal emergency response teams typically work as part of larger crews. Other public safety groups, such as law enforcement, often support emergency preparedness in the community and may have jobs specifically dedicated to education and outreach.

Job description
Vice President of Resident Safety and Emergency Preparedness
Salary Range: $140,000 - $150,000
Based in Irvine, California, Oakmont Management Group is a recognized leader in senior living, operating 110+ communities under the Oakmont Senior Living and Ivy Living brands. We are the largest operator in California and a top ten operator in the United States, serving thousands of seniors across California, Nevada, Colorado, and Hawaii. With strong momentum and continued expansion, we are actively growing into new markets.
The Vice President of Resident Safety and Emergency Preparedness is responsible for ensuring every Community and every Leader is prepared before an emergency occurs, and capable of responding with speed, coordination, and care when it does. This position will serve as the organizations incident co-commander, alongside the Senior Vice President of Operations during significant emergency events and organizational crises.
Position Responsibilities:
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organization's emergency preparedness and disaster response program across all Communities and operations.
- Develop, implement, and maintain standardized emergency response plans and protocols for natural disasters, utility failures, infectious disease outbreaks, hazardous material incidents, active threats, evacuations, shelter-in-place events, and other emergencies.
- Establish and maintain an enterprise incident command structure that effectively supports Community-level events through multi-site regional crises.
- Coordinate emergency response resources across Operations, Clinical, Facilities, and Executive Leadership during active incidents.
- Lead post-incident reviews, identify root causes, develop corrective action plans, and ensure identified improvements are implemented and monitored.
- Establish safety standards with particular attention to vulnerable populations and high-acuity residents by partnering with leadership to ensure compliance with life safety requirements, fall management, infection control protocols, and environmental risk reduction initiatives.
- Serve as the internal expert on emergency preparedness requirements and applicable federal, state, and local life safety regulations.
- Develop and maintain enterprise business continuity plans in partnership with Information Technology, Facilities, and Clinical teams.
- Establish critical vendor relationships and emergency resource agreements to ensure operational continuity and supply chain resilience during emergencies.
- Design and monitor emergency preparedness training programs, including required Community drills, exercises, and tabletop simulations that strengthen crisis decision-making and cross-functional coordination.
- Create scalable communication templates, response playbooks, and rapid-decision tools for Community leaders.
- Provide real-time operational assessments and decision support to executive leadership during emergency events.
- Coordinate cross-functional crisis response teams and ensure unified command across departments.
- Partner with Communications and Legal to support accurate, timely, and consistent internal and external crisis communications.
- Maintain executive-level reporting on enterprise safety risks, preparedness program performance, and incident trends.
- Able to travel based on need and priority. Adhere to Company travel policies and guidelines.
- As required by state licensure, complete annual and monthly training, attend scheduled in-services and mandatory meetings. Maintain all required certifications/licensures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Prefer ten (10) or more years of progressive leadership in emergency management, enterprise safety, disaster preparedness, business continuity, or closely related fields.
- Demonstrated experience leading organizational response during real, high-impact emergency events, not only exercises.
- Strong working knowledge of regulatory and life safety requirements in healthcare or senior living environments.
- Track record of building enterprise-scale programs in complex, multi-site organizations.
- Experience operating at the executive level, advising senior leadership, owning enterprise initiatives, and influencing without direct authority.
- Must pass a Criminal Background check and Health Screening tests.
- May require team members to vaccinate, participate in daily screening, surveillance testing, and to wear face coverings and other personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 or other communicable diseases, per regulatory guidelines.
With communities across California, Colorado, Hawaii, and Nevada, opportunities for career growth, relocation, and travel are significant. In addition, eligible team members may enjoy the following benefits:
