What are embedded systems engineering?

Embedded systems engineering is a branch of engineering focused on designing, developing, and maintaining specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger mechanical or electrical systems. These systems are found in a wide range of products, from household appliances and automobiles to medical devices and industrial machines. Embedded systems engineers work with both hardware and software to create solutions that are reliable, efficient, and tailored to specific tasks. Their work often involves programming microcontrollers, integrating sensors and actuators, and ensuring real-time performance. The field requires strong skills in programming, electronics, and systems integration.

What is the difference between Embedded Systems Engineering vs Firmware Engineering?

AspectEmbedded Systems EngineeringFirmware Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related fields; often certifications in embedded systemsBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering; certifications in embedded or firmware development
Work EnvironmentDesigning and developing hardware-software integrated systems, often in manufacturing or consumer electronicsWriting low-level code for hardware devices, often in consumer electronics, automotive, or IoT sectors
Employer & Industry UsageElectronics manufacturers, automotive, aerospace, consumer devicesConsumer electronics, IoT devices, automotive, industrial equipment

Embedded Systems Engineering focuses on designing complete embedded systems, including hardware and software integration. Firmware Engineering specializes in developing low-level code that runs directly on hardware devices. While both roles require similar skills and certifications, embedded engineers work on entire systems, whereas firmware engineers focus on firmware development for specific hardware components.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in computer engineering, electronics, and programming languages such as C/C++, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and tools like oscilloscopes and debuggers is typically required, along with certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) being advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills that help in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and troubleshooting complex systems. These skills ensure the reliable development, integration, and maintenance of embedded solutions critical to modern technology.

How do Embedded Systems Engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during product development?

Embedded Systems Engineers frequently work alongside hardware engineers, software developers, and quality assurance teams to design and integrate system components. This collaboration ensures seamless communication between hardware and software, and often involves joint debugging sessions, code reviews, and regular project meetings. Being able to clearly communicate technical requirements and constraints is vital, as is adapting to iterative feedback from other departments. Effective teamwork is essential to meet project timelines and deliver reliable embedded solutions.

Job description

Job Description
The Role
Global Manufacturing Electrical & SDV is looking for innovators who thrive in tough challenges and are passionate about tackling meaningful work that will shape the future of the automotive industry. This isn't a role for those looking for an easy path-it's for those who embrace change, push through obstacles, and take ownership of complex problems. While there will be long days and moments that test your resilience, you'll find purpose in your work, flexibility to prioritize your family, and the support of a people-first culture. If you're ready to grow, thrive, and make a real impact, we'd love to hear from you.
WHY: This role exists to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced manufacturing technologies by rapidly designing, building, and implementing innovative electrical and embedded solutions.
WHAT: As an Electrical & Embedded Systems Technical Expert, you will design, develop, validate, and maintain firmware, software, PCBs, and embedded systems that enable GM Manufacturing tools, processes, and test systems across development, validation, and production environments.
HOW: Partner directly with manufacturing, engineering, and IT teams to rapidly design, prototype, and deploy embedded hardware and software solutions-owning problems end-to-end from concept through plant implementation, and iterating in real time based on system performance, build feedback, and production needs.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
  • Design and maintain embedded firmware/applications in C/C++ for manufacturing and test equipment.
  • Design, review, and validate PCBs and interface hardware for labs, vehicles, and plant tools.
  • Integrate and debug vehicle communication (CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet/DoIP, UDS) and related diagnostic applications.
  • Configure and troubleshoot networked systems (switches, routers, gateways, VLANs) in lab and plant environments.
  • Rapidly prototype new hardware/software concepts and take them from lab demo to on-vehicle / in-plant deployment.
  • Act as a first-line problem solver for urgent electrical, embedded, and networking issues during builds, trials, and launches.
  • Collaborate across IT, Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Operations and clearly communicate status and risks.
  • Foster a forward-thinking work culture that embraces change and navigates future organizational and industry challenges.
  • Build and nurture strategic relationships across various functions including software, manufacturing, and program management to synergize efforts towards future innovations.

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications):
  • Strong experience in firmware/embedded software development using C or C++; familiarity with Python is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with vehicle communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet/DoIP).
  • Working knowledge of computer networking such as
TCP/IP, switches/routers, VLANs, basic routing and tools such as ping, traceroute, Wireshark or similar.
  • Proven debugging and troubleshooting skills across hardware, firmware, and networks.
  • Knowledge of vehicle electrical architectures and basic vehicle electrical/mechanical systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and ability to manage multiple concurrent, unplanned tasks.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
  • Solid understanding of embedded systems and hardware bring-up (microcontrollers, SoCs, SBCs such as NXP, TI, STM32, Raspberry Pi, etc.).
  • Experience with PCB design (schematic capture, layout tools like Altium/OrCAD/KiCad, SI, power, EMI/EMC).
  • Experience with DoIP, SoAD, UDS and tools such as Vehicle Spy, CANoe, or similar.
  • Background in automotive development, testing, or manufacturing and familiarity with VIP/vehicle architectures.
  • Experience with test automation, lab or plant test systems, and scripting (Vehicle Spy, AutoVal, AutoBot, Python, etc.).
  • Understanding of basic cybersecurity for in-vehicle and lab networked devices.
  • Hands-on rapid prototyping (3D printing, quick-turn PCB services, bench builds, hardware hacking).
  • Familiarity with GitHub, Jira, and modern development workflows.

This role is categorized as onsite. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location on a full-time basis. The selected candidate will be required to travel <25% for this role. This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
