Electronics Design Manager

PulseMedica is looking for a hands-on technical leader ready to influence the next generation of vision technology from Edmonton, Alberta - a growing hub of Canadian innovation. This role is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced engineer who wants to build, lead, and contribute to medical device advancements with global reach. Candidates across Canada may be considered for a hybrid arrangement that includes regular travel to our Edmonton headquarters.

In this role, you'll report directly to the CTO and lead a skilled team of electronics engineers while applying your own expertise in
analog/mixedsignal and FPGA design. It's a true playercoach position: you'll manage the Electronics Design team, guide technical execution, and stay actively involved in handson development.

We welcome applicants from Canada and abroad. For Canadian-based candidates, we offer a hybrid work model with consistent onsite collaboration in Edmonton. For the right individual, we also provide relocation support, immigration assistance, and the opportunity to join a company reshaping ophthalmic care on a global scale.

About Us

PulseMedica, proudly Great Place to Work Certified for the third consecutive year, is a fast-growing, innovative medical device startup. We combine cutting-edge research, advanced technology, and production excellence to tackle ophthalmic diseases and disabilities. Our mission is to provide novel treatment options through state-of-the-art solutions, blending real-time classical computer vision, deep learning algorithms, 3D eye imaging, and high-precision laser surgery. With a commitment to revolutionizing ophthalmic treatments, we are dedicated to delivering exceptional outcomes that prevent blindness and disabilities caused by eye diseases. At PulseMedica, we foster a collaborative and supportive environment where talent thrives, and our team's collective impact drives change in the field of eye care.

The Opportunity

As the Electronics Design Manager, you'll lead the design and delivery of complex, safety-critical electronics for our advanced ophthalmic systems. You'll provide both management of Electrical Engineers and technical oversight. Technical oversight will involve driving architecture, guiding design reviews, and mentoring engineers. You'll work cross-functionally across software, optics, mechanical, and systems teams to deliver cohesive, high-performance systems that meet regulatory and quality standards.

If you're a builder, leader, and mentor who thrives in dynamic, high-impact environments, this is your opportunity to grow a team and technology that will define the future of vision care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a growing team of electronics engineers.
  • Set the technical roadmap for electronics architecture and integration.
  • Contribute hands-on to FPGA and/or analog/mixed-signal design.
  • Establish scalable processes for design reviews, documentation, and compliance.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to ensure system-level performance and reliability.
  • Drive continuous improvement and foster a culture of innovation and mentorship.
  • Support regulatory, verification, and risk management activities (e.g., FMEA, ISO 14971).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical, Biomedical, or related engineering field.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in electronics design related to medical or high-reliability systems.
  • Proven experience leading and mentoring engineers or small teams.
  • Strong technical depth in one or more of:
    • Analog/mixed-signal design (low-noise, safety-critical systems), or
    • FPGA/digital design (from specification to verification).
  • Familiarity with embedded firmware and communication interfaces.
  • Understanding of regulatory and safety-critical design standards.
  • Strategic thinker with a hands-on approach - comfortable balancing leadership with design execution.
  • Startup mindset: adaptive, collaborative, and ready to grow with the team.

Anticipated Start Date: as soon as a suitable candidate is found

Duration: Full time Permanent (40 hours per week)

Salary: Commensurate to experience and qualifications

Location: Edmonton (Hybrid available for Canadian-based candidates)
