What are some common challenges faced by remote Embedded Software Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Embedded Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited direct access to physical hardware, coordinating across different time zones with team members, and maintaining effective communication for troubleshooting and integration tasks. These challenges can be mitigated by utilizing remote hardware labs, well-established code repositories, and clear documentation practices. Regular video meetings, collaborative development tools, and proactive status updates also help keep projects on track and align team efforts. By staying organized and responsive, remote engineers can overcome these obstacles and deliver high-quality embedded solutions.

What is an Embedded Software Engineer Remote job?

An Embedded Software Engineer Remote job involves designing, developing, and testing software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or IoT devices, while working remotely. These engineers write low-level code, optimize performance, and ensure seamless hardware-software integration. They use programming languages like C, C++, or Python and collaborate with teams through virtual communication tools. Remote roles require strong self-discipline, effective communication, and the ability to troubleshoot issues independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Embedded Software Engineer Remote position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Engineer Remote, you need strong programming skills in C/C++, a solid understanding of embedded systems architecture, and often a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), version control tools like Git, and hardware debugging tools is commonly required, and certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) are a plus. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication are important soft skills for effective remote collaboration. These capabilities enable you to deliver reliable, efficient solutions in a distributed work environment while supporting cross-functional teams and project objectives.

Our instrument combines microfluidic sample preparation, high-speed imaging, real-time image analysis, and advanced software to deliver clinically actionable results in minutes. We develop and maintain this technology under a regulated quality system compliant with FDA design controls, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, and modern cybersecurity expectations.
The Role
We are seeking a hands-on Senior Embedded Software Engineer to work on a contractual basis, contributing across the IntelliSep software platform, including the Sample Preparation Module (SPM), Cell Imaging Module (CIM), and Image Analysis Module (IAM). You will go beyond traditional embedded development by supporting Linux-based embedded platforms, software architecture, OS upgrades, and development infrastructure.
What You'll Do
  • Design, implement, and maintain embedded software in modern C++ across IntelliSep instrument platforms and Linux-based systems.ย
  • Support platform modernization efforts, including embedded OS upgrades, toolchain updates, and software infrastructure improvements.ย
  • Develop Python-based tools, build systems, and CI/CD pipelines to support verification and validation (V&V), manufacturing, service, and data workflows.ย
  • Troubleshoot complex issues spanning software, firmware, operating systems, networking, and instrument hardware.ย
  • Design and maintain interfaces between instrument subsystems, including imaging, motion control, sensing, and software services.ย
  • Author and maintain software requirements, architecture/design specifications, and quality system lifecycle artifacts.ย
  • Contribute to software V&V, cybersecurity maintenance, vulnerability remediation, risk management, and secure product development activities.ย
  • Distribute engineering knowledge through documentation, architecture reviews, and mentorship.
Required Qualifications
  • BS or MS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent industry experience.ย
  • 8+ years of experience developing embedded software for complex electromechanical systems.ย
  • Expert-level C++ programming on Linux-based systems, with strong multi-threading and performance-optimization experience.ย
  • Experience integrating and debugging complex instrumentation (motion control, imaging, sensors, networking) using equipment like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.ย
  • Strong Python programming skills.ย
  • Experience developing and maintaining CI/CD infrastructure, cross-compilation environments, and automated verification workflows.ย
  • Experience authoring software requirements, architecture documents, and design specifications.ย
  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot cross-disciplinary issues with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing medical device software under FDA design controls, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, and risk management frameworks.ย
  • Hands-on embedded Linux experience, including OS interfaces, deployment, debugging, and lifecycle maintenance.
  • Experience with Docker, containerized build environments, and infrastructure automation.ย
  • Experience with distributed embedded systems architecture, configuration management, and regulated development processes.ย
