The Role
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines. •
Key Responsibilities
• Support of shipboard structural modifications, fabrication of equipment foundations, and shipboard corrosion evaluation / mitigation
• Review and execute mechanical procedures, and certification documentation.
• Support ship construction and outfitting by evaluating non-conformances, developing repair recommendations, and verifying implementation.
• Conduct shipchecks to confirm as-built conditions and ensure design compliance with engineering standards.
• Interface with NAVSEA, Electric Boat, and internal departments to coordinate design and testing activities and resolve technical issues.
• Provide on-site engineering support to resolve field issues related to alignment, fit-up, welding, and dimensional control.
• Prepare and present technical reports, analyses, and recommendations to management and external customers.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
Experience with NDT standards as well as welding standards.
• Experience or coursework in one or more of the following:
  • Mechanical components and fabrication
  • Valves and pumps
  • Assembly, and final outfitting
  • Seals and hydraulic actuators
  • Assembly, and final outfitting

• Understanding of mechanical engineering and design principles and how they apply to shipbuilding
• Knowledge of submarine/carriers machinery and how it interfaces with structural, electrical and hydraulic systems
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven technical writing ability.
• Experience working in multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
• DOD Security Clearance is preferred, but not required to start.
• Strong technical writing and customer relations skills
• Six Sigma and/or Lean training/certification
