Job description

The Senior Embedded Application Software Engineer is responsible for leading the development and delivery of embedded control systems for commercial autonomous vehicle technologies. This role collaborates closely with cross-functional stakeholders to design, develop, test, integrate, and maintain high-quality, reliable embedded software that enhances vehicle performance, safety, operational efficiency, and customer uptime. The engineer translates and interprets system requirements into effective software solutions through requirements analysis, architecture and design, coding, debugging, validation, and integration activities, ensuring deliverables meet quality, performance, and regulatory standards, supporting PACCAR's innovation and product development goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded software models using MATLAB/Simulink/State flow per design of the software for next-generation electronic control units
  • Manage the source control and controlled release of software models to maintain schedule and functionality for projects
  • Participate in the planning and tracking of validation and usability studies of vehicle software module functionality
  • Test and implement software modifications to repair defects discovered during validation and testing
  • Lead reviews to ensure industry-leading embedded software development best practices are met with software models and modules
  • Work with vehicle property owners, product developers, system architects, software architects and suppliers to develop and maintain software-level technical requirements specifications
  • Design, test and release of embedded software for heavy commercial autonomous trucks
  • Provide interface documentation to wiring design, software architect(s), and other engineering design groups. Contributes to the development and continuous improvement of procedures and practices that ensure industry-leading, high-quality, reliable electronic systems and architecture
  • Travel up to 10% (domestic & international)

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline  
  • 7+ years of experience developing embedded application software  
  • Strong proficiency in model-based development using MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow  
  • Experience with debugging, MIL/ SIL/ unit testing as well as some scripting (C, Python, CAPL)
  • Experience with bench testing with Vector tools such as CANoe or CANalyzer  
  • Experience working with Git, SVN, CI/CD pipelines, Jenkins, and Azure in an Agile environment  
  • Familiarity with AUTOSAR, ISO 26262, and vehicle networks such as CAN, SAE J1939, and LIN  
  • Preferred experience creating documentation such as software requirements specifications and engineering change notices  
  • Preferred experience with requirements management and systems engineering tools  
  • Preferred background in autonomous vehicle, automotive, commercial vehicle software, or a similar industry  
  • Knowledge of ISO 15504, SPICE compliance, and system-level embedded/software prototyping  
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders  
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 10%
