How much do embedded software architect jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for embedded software architect in the United States is $171,593.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $173,000.00 and $173,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an embedded software architect?

An Embedded Software Architect is a specialized engineer responsible for designing the overall structure and high-level functionality of software used in embedded systems. These professionals define the architecture, interfaces, and protocols necessary for embedded applications to interact with hardware and other software components. They work closely with hardware engineers and development teams to ensure that the software meets performance, reliability, and scalability requirements. Embedded Software Architects play a critical role in industries such as automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial automation, where reliable and efficient embedded systems are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded software architect?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Architect, you need deep expertise in embedded systems design, programming languages such as C/C++, and a strong understanding of real-time operating systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or electrical engineering. Familiarity with tools like UML for modeling, version control systems (e.g., Git), and hardware-software integration platforms is essential, and certifications like Certified Software Architect (CSA) can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and translate complex requirements into scalable architectures. These abilities ensure robust, efficient, and reliable embedded solutions that meet both technical and business objectives.

How does an embedded software architect typically collaborate with hardware engineers and other stakeholders during a project?

An Embedded Software Architect works closely with hardware engineers to ensure that software design aligns seamlessly with hardware capabilities and constraints. Regular meetings and design reviews are common, where both teams discuss interface requirements, performance targets, and potential integration challenges. Additionally, the architect often collaborates with project managers, quality assurance teams, and sometimes clients, to clarify requirements and ensure the final product meets all specifications. Effective communication and cross-disciplinary teamwork are key to successfully delivering robust embedded systems.

Job Title: Embedded Software Engineer

Real-time embedded software

Position Overview

Synovix is seeking two experienced Embedded Software Engineers to support an on-site missile and weapon -systems program for a defense customer. The engineers will design, implement, integrate, and verify real-time embedded software across the development lifecycle.

What You Will Do
  • Design, develop, integrate, and test real-time embedded software for safety- and mission-critical weapon system applications.
  • Translate system and software requirements into maintainable software architecture, detailed designs, code, and verification evidence.
  • Develop primarily in C and C++ using the Green Hills development environment or a comparable embedded toolchain.
  • Integrate software with processors, sensors, actuators, interfaces, and laboratory test assets.
  • Diagnose timing, memory, concurrency, interface, and hardware/software integration issues on target hardware.
  • Support peer reviews, configuration management, defect resolution, and test readiness; guide architecture decisions, mentor engineers, and coordinate with systems, GNC, algorithms, modeling, test, and hardware teams.
Required Qualifications
  • At least 8 years of relevant embedded software engineering experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated C and/or C++ development experience in a real-time or resource-constrained embedded environment.
  • Experience with the complete software lifecycle: requirements, design, implementation, integration, verification, and problem resolution.
  • Experience debugging software on target hardware using standard embedded development and laboratory tools.
  • U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain a U.S. government security clearance if required by the program; an active clearance is not required at hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Missile, weapon system, avionics, flight control, seeker, or other aerospace/defense embedded software experience.
  • Green Hills MULTI, INTEGRITY RTOS, VxWorks, embedded Linux, or comparable RTOS/toolchain experience.
  • Experience with device drivers, board support packages, low-level interfaces, middleware, or hardware abstraction layers.
  • Familiarity with deterministic scheduling, interprocess communication, data buses, networking protocols, and performance optimization.
  • Experience with model-based development, software-in-the-loop, processor-in-the-loop, or hardware-in-the-loop test environments.
  • Knowledge of disciplined software standards and practices used in defense or safety-critical development.
