What is an embedded security?

An Embedded Security job focuses on protecting embedded systems, such as IoT devices, medical equipment, or automotive control units, from cyber threats. Professionals in this role design secure firmware, implement cryptographic protocols, conduct vulnerability assessments, and ensure compliance with security standards. They work closely with hardware and software teams to integrate security features while maintaining performance and reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in embedded security?

To thrive in Embedded Security, you need a strong background in embedded systems engineering, knowledge of cryptography, and expertise in securing hardware and firmware, often supported by a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or computer science. Familiarity with security tools like static code analyzers, secure boot processes, and protocols such as TLS/SSL is common, along with certifications like CISSP or CEH. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills help set professionals apart. These abilities are crucial for identifying and mitigating vulnerabilities in embedded devices, ensuring robust protection in increasingly connected and critical environments.

What are some typical challenges encountered in an embedded security role?

Professionals in Embedded Security frequently face the challenge of balancing robust security measures with the resource limitations of embedded devices, such as limited processing power and memory. They may also need to address legacy system integrations, evolving threat landscapes, and compliance with industry-specific security standards. Collaboration with hardware engineers, firmware developers, and product managers is common to ensure security is integrated throughout the development lifecycle. By staying current with emerging vulnerabilities and designing proactive solutions, Embedded Security specialists play a key role in protecting products and end users.

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.

About The Team

At Anduril we are developing cutting-edge artificial intelligence systems, command and control platforms, and autonomous systems across air, land, maritime, and space domains. We are looking for Embedded Software Anti-Tamper Engineers to drive a mission-focused, threat-informed approach to Program Protection Engineering for the next generation of Anduril's embedded and autonomous systems. In order to be successful at Anduril, an Embedded Software Anti-Tamper Engineer must be fluent in secure design and implementation, with a hands-on, contribution-focused mindset. This role will work side-by-side with Systems Security and Product Software Engineers to actualize program protection requirements into tamper-resistant embedded systems across the Anduril portfolio.

What You'll Do
  • Develop software and firmware for security-sensitive systems on embedded platforms.
  • Implement boot and run-time Anti-Tamper functionality.
  • Apply cryptographic mechanisms for authentication, encryption, integrity, and key handling.
  • Support board bring-up, hardware-software integration, and low-level debugging across boot, initialization, peripheral interfaces, and device communication.
  • Work with Hardware, FPGA, Systems, and Security engineers to integrate trusted platform features across SoCs, FPGA-based devices, and related components.
  • Design, document, implement, and validate security-critical features.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience with safety and security-critical embedded software and/or firmware engineering.
  • Understanding and application of cryptography.
  • Experience working with embedded platforms that may include SoCs, FPGAs, and hardware security-relevant components.
  • Experience in one or more of the following languages: C/C++, Rust.
  • Current U.S. Secret or Top Secret security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Real-Time Operating Systems.
  • Experience with Nix and NixOS.
  • Experience with Industry-standard embedded software toolchains.
  • Experience with Linux as a development environment.
  • Embedded security and Anti-Tamper architecture, design and implementation.
  • Experience reviewing chain of trust systems, key lifecycle management designs, isolation architectures, or tamper resistant platform designs.
  • Experience in defense, aerospace, robotics, autonomous systems, industrial control, or other mission-critical embedded environments.
