Director Embedded Security information

What does a director of embedded security do?

A Director of Embedded Security leads the development and implementation of security strategies for embedded systems, such as hardware devices, IoT products, and automotive technologies. This role involves overseeing teams that design secure architectures, perform risk assessments, and ensure compliance with industry standards. The director collaborates with engineering, product, and compliance teams to identify vulnerabilities and integrate robust security measures throughout the product lifecycle. Additionally, they stay up-to-date with emerging threats and technologies to continuously improve security practices within the organization.

How does a director of embedded security typically collaborate with product development teams to ensure security is integrated throughout the lifecycle?

A Director of Embedded Security works closely with product development teams from the earliest design stages through deployment, ensuring that security requirements are addressed at every phase. This involves conducting threat modeling, reviewing architecture, and guiding secure coding practices. Regular cross-functional meetings and security training sessions are common, as is the establishment of secure development policies. By maintaining open communication and providing expert guidance, the Director helps teams proactively address security risks without hindering product timelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director of embedded security, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director of Embedded Security, you need deep expertise in cybersecurity, embedded systems, and risk management, typically supported by a degree in computer science or engineering and extensive industry experience. Familiarity with security standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 27001, NIST), secure coding practices, and relevant certifications such as CISSP or CEH are commonly required. Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills help drive cross-functional initiatives and influence security culture. These skills are crucial for safeguarding products and infrastructure against evolving threats while ensuring compliance and business continuity.

Job description

  • Design and implement embedded security solutions for next-generation automotive platforms.

  • Translate high-level security and system requirements into scalable, secure embedded system designs.

  • Collaborate with systems engineering to refine requirements and ensure feasibility in embedded environments.

  • Partner with cybersecurity teams to define and implement security architectures and platform-level security components.

  • Work closely with test teams to support validation activities, including test case development and issue resolution.

  • Identify gaps in existing architecture and design, then build and integrate missing components end-to-end.

  • Develop, maintain, and optimize embedded software using Embedded C as the primary language.

  • Implement and support unit testing and participate in broader system and integration testing efforts.

  • Utilize Git for version control and Jira for task/issue tracking to manage day-to-day development work.

  • Contribute to secure services, key provisioning workflows, and cryptographic operations within the platform.

  • Troubleshoot complex issues in a Linux-based embedded environment, including performance and security-related defects.

  • Operate as a self-directed engineer, driving delivery of key platform milestones and contributing production-level code on aggressive timelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • 10+ years of embedded systems development experience

  • Strong hands-on experience with Embedded C as primary development language

  • Proven track record of building security into shipped embedded products

  • Strong experience working in Linux-based embedded environments

  • Experience designing and implementing embedded security solutions (platform-level security, secure services, key provisioning, etc.)

  • Comfortable working in early-stage, prototype, and preโ€“go-to-market environments

  • Ability to work independently, operate in ambiguity, and drive solutions end-to-end

  • Experience collaborating with systems engineering, cybersecurity, and test/validation teams

  • Proficiency with Git for source control

  • Experience using Jira or similar tools for work tracking and issue management

  • Strong problem-solving, debugging, and unit testing skills in embedded contexts

  • Rust programming experience (even better)

  • Experience with TPM (Trusted Platform Module)

  • Experience with secure boot implementations

  • Experience with key provisioning and cryptographic services

  • Background in automotive platforms (highly preferred)

  • Experience in consumer devices (mobile, IoT, etc.)

  • Experience at semiconductor companies (e.g., Qualcomm, AMD, Intel, Broadcom)

Core Competencies

Demonstrates expertise in designing and implementing embedded security solutions for automotive platforms, with a strong focus on Embedded C programming, Linux-based environments, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. Proven ability to drive end-to-end solutions and optimize embedded software while ensuring security and performance.
