What is an embedded programmer?

Embedded programmers are software developers who specialize in writing code for embedded systems—computers designed to perform dedicated functions within larger mechanical or electrical systems. These programmers typically work with hardware like microcontrollers, sensors, and other specialized devices, often using languages such as C or C++. Their work ensures that devices like medical equipment, automotive controls, consumer electronics, and industrial machines operate reliably and efficiently. Embedded programmers must have a strong understanding of both software development and hardware integration.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an embedded programmer?

To thrive as an Embedded Programmer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, strong proficiency in C/C++ programming, and experience with microcontroller architectures. Familiarity with development tools like debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems (e.g., Git), and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills that set high performers apart. These skills and qualities ensure reliable, efficient code development and smooth collaboration within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

What are common challenges faced by embedded programmers when integrating hardware and software components?

Embedded programmers often encounter challenges such as limited memory, processing power, and real-time constraints when integrating hardware and software. Debugging can be more complex due to the interaction between code and physical devices, requiring specialized tools like oscilloscopes or logic analyzers. Additionally, ensuring compatibility across various hardware platforms and managing low-level drivers can add to the complexity, making strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail essential in this role.

Job Summary

We are hiring a Principal Architect to lead the product and systems architecture of Ingersoll Rand's Digital Solutions portfolio. Our products combine industrial compressors and blowers with embedded controls, edge connectivity, and cloud services - used by customers in demanding environments around the world. This is a senior individual contributor role. You will set the technical direction that subsystem teams across the company build against, and you will be a recognized technical voice within Ingersoll Rand. You'll spend most of your time on deep architectural work and on the high-leverage artifacts that direct the portfolio, working closely with Product Management, Engineering Leadership, and architects across our digital subsystems.

Responsibilities
  • Define and own the product and systems architecture across the Digital Solutions portfolio, from embedded firmware and Linux platforms to connectivity and cloud services.
  • Own the ecosystem architecture and ensure it remains coherent as products, platforms, and integrations evolve.
  • Translate product strategy and commercial roadmaps into clear technical direction, and adapt the architecture as new opportunities are identified.
  • Interface with architects across all digital subsystems to drive alignment on shared architecture, resolve cross-team architectural conflicts, and approve changes to shared interfaces.
  • Author and maintain the reference architectures, architectural decision records, and design standards that subsystem teams build against.
  • Contribute architectural insight to build-versus-buy decisions, technology selection, and partner evaluations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degree is a plus.
  • 10+ years of experience in software, systems, or embedded engineering, with several years operating at a portfolio, platform, or principal-architect level of scope.
Travel & Work Arrangements/Requirements
  • Ability and willingness to travel 10-15% (primarily domestic to Ingersoll Rand testing and manufacturing facilities).
Key Competencies
  • Track record of architecting products that combine embedded firmware (bare-metal or RTOS), embedded Linux platforms (for example Yocto-based distributions), connectivity, and cloud or backend services.
  • Strong knowledge of cybersecurity for connected products, including secure boot, identity and key management, and over-the-air update strategies.
  • Experience with industrial control systems, motor control, or industrial protocols is a strong plus. Familiarity with regulatory standards such as UL, IEC, ISO, or EMI/EMC is also a plus.
  • Fluent in modern software engineering practice: Agile delivery, CI/CD, version control, automated testing, and observability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to explain complex technical decisions to engineering teams, executive leadership, and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with globally distributed engineering teams across multiple regions.
Pay Range

The pay range for this role is $150,000-$160,000, excluding incentive opportunities. The pay range takes into account a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skills; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and geographic location. Hired applicant will be eligible to receive (discretionary/nondiscretionary) annual bonuses and incentive compensation.
