Embedded Microcontroller Engineer information

What does an Embedded Microcontroller Engineer do?

An Embedded Microcontroller Engineer designs, develops, and tests systems that use microcontrollers to perform specific functions within larger electronic devices. They write firmware (software that runs directly on hardware), integrate hardware and software components, and troubleshoot issues to ensure reliable operation. These engineers work on products like automotive systems, consumer electronics, medical devices, and industrial machinery. Their role often involves optimizing code for performance and memory constraints, as well as collaborating closely with hardware and software teams.

What are some common challenges an Embedded Microcontroller Engineer faces when integrating hardware and software components?

Embedded Microcontroller Engineers often encounter challenges in synchronizing hardware with software, especially when dealing with timing constraints and resource limitations. Debugging issues can be complex, as problems may arise from either the code or the physical hardware. Additionally, ensuring compatibility between different components and maintaining system stability during updates require strong problem-solving skills and close collaboration with hardware designers and firmware developers.

What is the difference between Embedded Microcontroller Engineer vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Microcontroller EngineerFirmware Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering or related; certifications like ARM or embedded systems coursesBachelor's in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering; certifications in embedded systems or programming languages
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing microcontroller-based systems, often in hardware labs or development environmentsDeveloping low-level code for devices, often in software development environments
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, automotive, industrial automationConsumer electronics, IoT devices, embedded systems

Both roles involve embedded systems, but Embedded Microcontroller Engineers focus more on hardware integration and microcontroller-specific development, while Firmware Engineers concentrate on writing low-level code to control hardware functions. The roles often overlap, but their primary focus and work environments differ slightly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Microcontroller Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Microcontroller Engineer, you need strong proficiency in C/C++ programming, embedded systems design, and a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with development tools such as debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems (e.g., Git), and experience with microcontroller families like ARM, PIC, or AVR are typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective problem-solving skills help you excel in troubleshooting and optimizing embedded systems. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure the reliability, efficiency, and functionality of hardware-software integrations in complex electronic products.

Job description

Battelle delivers when others can't. We conduct research and development, manage national laboratories, design and manufacture products and deliver critical services for our clients-whether they are a multi-national corporation, a small start-up or a government agency.
We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
Job Summary
Our Medical Device Solutions team develops innovative medical technologies from early concepts through product development and commercialization. We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the design, development, testing, and integration of advanced medical devices and electronic systems.
This role is ideal for engineers with hands-on experience in embedded electronics, analog and digital circuit design, PCB development, and regulated product development environments who enjoy working on multidisciplinary teams to solve complex technical challenges.
Responsibilities
  • Design and develop analog, digital, and mixed-signal electronic circuits for medical device systems and subsystems.
  • Support concept generation and technical brainstorming to address complex design challenges and evaluate potential solutions.
  • Develop embedded electronics and hardware architectures including microcontrollers, sensors, power systems, and communications interfaces.
  • Perform schematic capture and PCB design/layout using tools such as Altium or similar ECAD platforms.
  • Build, prototype, and evaluate electronic hardware assemblies in laboratory environments.
  • Perform hands-on circuit board assembly, soldering, and rework including surface-mount and through-hole components.
  • Fabricate and assemble wire harnesses and prototype electrical subsystems for test and development.
  • Conduct hardware bring-up, electrical testing, debugging, and fault isolation using laboratory instrumentation.
  • Apply engineering analysis techniques including SPICE simulation, tolerance analysis, signal integrity evaluation, and experimental design.
  • Support development of system architecture, technical requirements, and subsystem specifications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including mechanical engineers, firmware/software developers, systems engineers, and quality specialists.
  • Generate and maintain engineering documentation, verification reports, and test protocols.
  • Support compliance with ISO 13485 quality management systems and design control requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and verification activities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and interns.
  • Contribute technical input for client proposals and project planning activities.

Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 2+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Technical Skills:
    • Analog and digital circuit design
    • Embedded electronics and microcontroller systems (e.g., ARM-based platforms, STM32, or similar architectures)
    • PCB schematic capture and layout (Altium Designer or similar ECAD platforms)
    • Hardware prototyping and development
    • Electronic troubleshooting, debugging, and fault isolation
    • Use of laboratory instrumentation (oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, and programmable power supplies)
    • Hardware prototyping techniques including circuit board assembly, SMT rework, and prototype cable or harness fabrication
    • Hardware verification and test method development
    • Technical documentation and engineering reporting

Preferred Qualifications
