Embedded Linux Remote information

What are the common challenges faced when working remotely as an Embedded Linux engineer, and how can they be managed?

Remote Embedded Linux engineers often face challenges such as debugging hardware-related issues without direct physical access, coordinating with cross-functional teams across time zones, and maintaining effective communication about project status. To manage these, many teams utilize remote debugging tools, establish clear documentation practices, and schedule regular check-ins to ensure alignment. Being proactive in communication and leveraging collaborative platforms can help overcome most remote work hurdles in this field.

What is an Embedded Linux Remote job?

An Embedded Linux Remote job involves working with embedded systems that run on the Linux operating system, but with the flexibility to work remotely instead of on-site. Professionals in this role develop, program, test, and maintain Linux-based software for devices like routers, IoT gadgets, automotive systems, and industrial controllers. They are responsible for kernel development, device driver integration, optimizing system performance, and ensuring the stability and security of embedded devices. Remote embedded Linux engineers collaborate with teams using online tools, manage code repositories, and may need to debug hardware remotely or via simulators. This position requires strong knowledge of Linux internals, C/C++ programming, and experience with embedded hardware platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Linux Engineer working remotely, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Linux Engineer working remotely, you need a solid background in embedded systems development, Linux OS internals, and programming languages such as C/C++. Experience with cross-compilation toolchains, version control systems (like Git), and knowledge of build systems (such as Yocto or Buildroot) are typically required, along with relevant certifications being advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication skills are crucial for effective remote collaboration and troubleshooting. These competencies ensure reliable system performance, efficient remote teamwork, and the successful delivery of robust embedded solutions.

Do embedded systems engineers work remotely?

Embedded Linux remote engineers often have the option to work remotely, especially for tasks involving software development, debugging, and system design. However, some roles may require on-site presence for hardware integration, testing, or collaboration, depending on the company's policies and project needs.

Will AI replace embedded developers?

Embedded Linux developers design and maintain software for embedded systems, and AI is unlikely to fully replace them due to the need for specialized knowledge of hardware, real-time constraints, and system integration. AI can assist with coding and testing tasks, but human expertise remains essential for complex problem-solving and system optimization in embedded environments.

Is embedded Linux in demand?

Embedded Linux is in high demand across industries such as automotive, IoT, and consumer electronics due to its flexibility, open-source nature, and widespread adoption. Skills in Linux kernel development, device drivers, and real-time operating systems increase employability in this field.

What is the salary of embedded Linux developer?

The salary of an embedded Linux developer typically ranges from $70,000 to $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and specific skills such as C/C++ programming, Linux kernel development, and hardware integration. Senior roles or those with specialized expertise can earn higher compensation, especially in high-demand industries like IoT and automotive technology.

Job description

About the Role

We are hiring a Staff C++ Software Engineer to join our growing team developing NinjaOne’s automated endpoint management suite of software products, trusted by over 40,000 customers globally. You will develop high-impact software products used daily by IT teams and MSPs (managed service providers) to monitor, manage, and secure endpoints at scale.

You’ll collaborate in a fast-paced, agile environment that emphasizes rapid iteration and customer-driven outcomes, working alongside other Software Engineers, Product Designers, and Product Managers.  You are responsible for implementing design patterns and working on enterprise level software challenges in a startup environment, enabling firsthand product impact, while building software of scale that runs on millions and millions of endpoints.

About the Patching Team

Patching engineers own the full lifecycle of keeping endpoints up-to-date, from detecting available patches to safely applying them and rebooting. The work spans OS patches across multiple platforms (Windows Update, macOS software update, Linux package managers) and third-party application updates (3PP).

As a Staff Engineer on this team, you'll work on our C++ agent repo — the software that runs directly on customer devices with elevated system privileges to detect, install, and validate patches across Windows, macOS, and Linux. This means working close to the metal with system-level APIs, building resilient install and rollback logic, and reading and acting on policy owned by our mainline platform team. You'll be one of the most senior technical voices on the C++ side of Patching, helping shape architecture and mentoring other engineers as the team continues to grow.

Location - We are flexible on remote working from home, if you are located in the USA and reside in one of the following states - CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, *IL, KS, MA, MD, ME, NJ, NC, NY, OR, TN, TX, VA, and WA. We have physical offices in Austin, TX and Tampa, FL, if you prefer a hybrid option.

We hire the best software engineers, but experience in our stack can’t hurt: NinjaOne is built on Java, Kotlin, C++, Golang and Postgres, supporting millions of user endpoints and running as a scalable cloud service in AWS.  Knowing large-scale datastore bottlenecks, asynchronous application design and client-server architecture will help you.

What You’ll be Doing

  • Reviewing Code - Review code for correctness, maintainability, and architectural health
  • Mentoring - Guide and grow senior and mid-level engineers on the team
  • Process Implementation and Improvement - Identify gaps, propose fixes, and drive them through to completion
  • Cross Team Collaboration - Align with mainline, catalog, and other patching squads on shared ownership and integration points
  • Ensuring Product / Business Level Needs Are Engineered Into the Product - Translate roadmap priorities and customer needs into sound technical design
  • Other duties as needed

About You

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related technical field
  • 10+ years of C++ development experience, Modern C++ (C++17 and above)
  • Experience in Cross-platform development (Windows/macOS/Linux – Win32 API, POSIX)
  • gRPC / Protocol Buffers
  • SQLite / Embedded database patterns
  • CMake
  • Proficiency working with Qt and Vcpkg a strong plus
