How much do embedded firmware jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for embedded firmware in Ohio is $115,992.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $97,900.00 and $134,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by embedded firmware engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Embedded firmware engineers often encounter challenges such as resource constraints, debugging hardware-software interactions, and ensuring real-time performance. Working within limited memory and processing power requires efficient coding practices and thorough optimization. Additionally, close collaboration with hardware teams is essential to troubleshoot issues that may arise from tight integration with physical components. Staying updated with the latest tools and methodologies, along with strong problem-solving skills, helps address these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded firmware engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Firmware Engineer, you need a strong background in computer engineering or electrical engineering, with expertise in C/C++ programming, microcontroller architectures, and hardware-software integration. Familiarity with tools like debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems (e.g., Git), and industry certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer can be beneficial. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are vital for developing reliable, efficient firmware that meets product requirements and ensures seamless operation of embedded devices.

What is an embedded firmware engineer?

Embedded firmware engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain the low-level software (firmware) that controls hardware devices. Their work involves writing code that directly interfaces with microcontrollers or processors, enabling devices such as appliances, automotive systems, medical devices, and consumer electronics to function as intended. They often work closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration between hardware and software, optimizing performance and reliability. Embedded firmware engineers typically use programming languages like C or C++ and have a deep understanding of both hardware and software systems.

What is the difference between Embedded Firmware vs Embedded Software Developer?

AspectEmbedded FirmwareEmbedded Software Developer
CredentialsTypically requires embedded systems or electronics background, often with certifications in embedded systemsRequires programming skills, often with degrees in computer science or software engineering
Work EnvironmentHardware-focused, working closely with microcontrollers, sensors, and hardware componentsSoftware-focused, developing applications that run on embedded systems
Industry UsageUsed in consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and industrial equipmentDevelops software for embedded systems across various industries

Embedded Firmware specialists focus on programming low-level code directly on hardware devices, often requiring hardware knowledge. Embedded Software Developers create higher-level software that runs on embedded systems, emphasizing coding and application development. Both roles are essential in embedded systems development but differ in scope and focus.

Job description

Job Overview

Hubbell Utility Solutions is seeking a Staff Engineer (10+ years experience) to join our Engineering Enablement team - a cross-functional group whose product is the productivity of every engineer in the organization.
This team operates on a model widely adopted across the industry (Platform Engineering / DevEx): instead of every product team solving common infrastructure challenges independently, we build shared capabilities once and continuously improve them for everyone. In this role, you will design and build the 'golden paths' engineers use every day - the fastest, safest, and most reliable way to build, test, and release embedded products. These are not documents - they are working systems: CI/CD pipelines, automation frameworks, test infrastructure, and developer workflows. You will work at the intersection of embedded firmware, Python-based automation, Azure DevOps platform engineering, and real hardware validation - helping transform how engineering is performed across the organization.

#LI-SL1

A Day In The Life

Every day at Hubbell is different and you'll contribute in many ways. On any given day, you'll make a difference by:

  • Most engineering roles focus on building a single product. This role focuses on building the systems that make every product team faster.
  • You will shape how firmware is built, tested, and released across the organization, creating shared infrastructure used by multiple teams. This is the same pattern used by leading technology companies and is commonly referred to as Platform Engineering or Developer Experience (DevEx).
  • This role offers outsized technical impact: instead of improving one system, your work improves the productivity, reliability, and velocity of the entire engineering organization.

What you will build

Golden Paths for Engineering
Design and implement end-to-end CI/CD systems for embedded firmware - from commit to release
Build reusable pipeline templates and automation frameworks used across multiple product teams
Create onboarding and self-service systems that reduce setup time and improve consistency
Engineering Infrastructure as a Product
Treat CI/CD pipelines and engineering tooling as product-grade systems - reliable, observable, and continuously improved
Integrate build, test, security, signing, and release into seamless workflows
Define and evolve standard patterns that become the easiest and best way to work
Embedded + Automation Systems
Automate build, flash, and validation workflows involving embedded toolchains and real hardware
Integrate hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and CI systems
Developer Experience (DevEx) Engineering
Measure and improve build reliability, speed, and usability
Reduce friction across firmware, test, and systems engineering workflows
Partner with engineers to identify pain points and convert them into scalable solutions

Tools and Technologies

Azure DevOps (Pipelines, Repos, Artifacts) Python Git YAML pipelines Embedded toolchains (IAR, Simplicity Studio, or similar) Build systems (C/C++) Test automation frameworks Hardware-in-the-loop systems DevSecOps tools (SAST, SCA, code signing)

What will help you thrive in this role?

Core Skills
Strong Python development for building automation, tooling, and engineering systems
Experience architecting CI/CD systems (Azure DevOps preferred)
Deep understanding of build systems, version control, and release workflows
Embedded Systems
Experience with firmware development or embedded build systems
Comfortable working at the boundary between software and hardware
Experience Level
10+ years in software engineering, firmware development, platform engineering, or similar
Demonstrated ownership of complex systems used by other engineers
Mindset
Treat infrastructure and tooling as a product
Focus on usability, reliability, and long-term maintainability
Motivated by solving problems that impact entire organizations
Nice to Have
Experience with Azure DevOps ecosystems
Familiarity with test automation and hardware-in-the-loop systems
Experience integrating security/scanning tools into pipelines

Growth Path

This role is designed as a high-impact technical leadership position. As the Engineering Enablement function matures, this role may evolve into broader platform ownership, architectural leadership, or domain-focused technical strategy roles.
