Embedded Controls Engineers commonly work on projects involving the design, development, and testing of control algorithms and embedded firmware for products such as vehicles, industrial equipment, or consumer electronics. You will regularly collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including hardware engineers, software developers, and test engineers to ensure integration and functionality. Most roles involve a mix of individual technical work—such as coding and troubleshooting—and group activities, like design reviews and system validation. This collaborative environment not only builds technical acumen but also provides opportunities for professional growth and exposure to complex, real-world engineering challenges.
To thrive as an Embedded Controls Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, embedded systems programming (typically in C/C++), and control systems theory, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS), microcontrollers, industry-standard software tools (such as MATLAB/Simulink), and relevant certifications like Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) is valuable. Skills such as analytical problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork stand out in this role. These skills are essential for designing, implementing, and optimizing reliable control systems that integrate seamlessly with hardware under real-world constraints.
An Embedded Controls Engineer designs, develops, and implements control systems for embedded devices, typically in automotive, industrial, or consumer electronics applications. They work with microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators to create efficient and reliable systems. Their responsibilities include writing embedded software, troubleshooting hardware-software interactions, and optimizing system performance. They often use programming languages like C/C++ and tools like MATLAB/Simulink for modeling and simulation.
Design and develop electrical systems, wiring diagrams, control panels, and electronic components for automatic pool cover products.
Create and maintain electrical schematics, bills of materials (BOMs), wiring instructions, and engineering documentation.
Program, troubleshoot, and improve motor controls, sensors, limit switches, control boards, and related electrical components.
Collaborate with mechanical engineers to integrate electrical and mechanical systems into new and existing products.
Evaluate new technologies, components, and suppliers to improve product performance, reliability, and cost.
Support new product development from concept through production launch.
Troubleshoot electrical issues identified during manufacturing, testing, installation, or field service.
Partner with Manufacturing to improve assembly processes, reduce defects, and increase production efficiency.
Develop and execute validation and reliability testing for electrical systems and components.
Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for product failures and quality concerns.
Ensure products comply with applicable electrical codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
Support Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and maintain accurate revision control.
Provide technical support and training to Manufacturing, Customer Service, and Field Service teams.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, safety, cost reduction, and process optimization.
Assist with prototype builds, product testing, and product certifications as needed.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field.
3–5 years of electrical engineering experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
Experience designing low-voltage electrical systems, motor controls, and electromechanical products.
Proficiency with electrical CAD software for schematic design.
Knowledge of electrical testing equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, and power analyzers.
Experience with PLCs, embedded controls, microcontrollers, or motor drive systems is preferred.
Familiarity with design for manufacturability (DFM) and lean manufacturing principles.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Understanding of electrical safety standards and best engineering practices.
Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and product specifications.
Strong project management and organizational skills.
Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Continuous improvement mindset with attention to detail.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and engineering software applications.
Primarily works in an office environment with frequent interaction on the manufacturing floor.
Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
May require occasional travel to suppliers, customer sites, or field installations for testing and troubleshooting.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach during manufacturing support activities.
Ability to inspect products and electrical assemblies, including close visual work.
Ability to safely operate testing equipment and tools.
Product quality and reliability improvements.
Reduction in manufacturing defects and warranty claims.
Successful implementation of new product designs and engineering changes.
On-time completion of engineering projects.
Compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
