As of Aug 22, 2026, the average hourly pay for embedded contractor in Massachusetts is $50.29, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $29.14 and $66.02 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an embedded contractor?

Embedded contractors are professionals who are hired on a contract basis to work directly within a client's organization, usually as part of an internal team. Unlike external consultants who provide advice from outside, embedded contractors are fully integrated into the company's day-to-day operations, often working on-site and collaborating closely with staff. They typically possess specialized skills required for specific projects or roles, such as software development, engineering, or project management. Embedded contractors can offer flexibility and expertise without the long-term commitment of hiring a full-time employee.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an embedded contractor?

To thrive as an Embedded Contractor, you need a solid background in embedded systems design, programming (typically in C/C++), and hardware/software integration, often backed by an engineering degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and version control systems is essential, along with relevant certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE). Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication skills help contractors quickly integrate with new teams and projects. These skills are crucial for delivering reliable embedded solutions within tight deadlines and diverse environments.

What are common challenges faced by embedded contractors when working with new client teams?

Embedded Contractors often need to quickly adapt to new team dynamics, workflows, and technical environments. One common challenge is understanding the client's existing codebase and aligning with their development standards within a short onboarding period. Additionally, contractors must balance delivering results efficiently with building trust and clear communication among permanent team members. Proactively asking questions and clarifying expectations early on can help ensure a smoother transition and successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Embedded Contractor vs Embedded Engineer?

AspectEmbedded ContractorEmbedded Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires relevant certifications or experience in embedded systemsRequires similar credentials, often with a degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering
Work EnvironmentContract-based, often project-specific, working on-site or remotelyFull-time or contract, working within engineering teams on product development
Industry UsageCommon in tech, manufacturing, and defense sectorsPrimarily in electronics, automotive, and consumer device industries
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for project-based roles or freelance workCompared for full-time engineering roles or specialized development

In summary, Embedded Contractors typically work on a temporary basis, focusing on specific projects, while Embedded Engineers are usually full-time staff involved in ongoing product development. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, but differ mainly in employment type and work setting.

Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
Hybrid/In Person: Boston, MA Headquarters (2-4 days/week)
LineVision is hiring an operating executive who can turn grid intelligence software and hardware into the systems regulated utilities depend on to run their operations.
We are seeking a VP of Engineering to own engineering delivery across our software and hardware organizations. You will run delivery of Nexus Core, our next-generation multi-tenant SaaS platform for dynamic line rating, as it moves past launch and into daily operations for a growing base of utility customers. You will also bring the engineering judgment behind the current wave of hardware evolution on our field-deployed sensor. If you want to build and run a development organization at pace across software and hardware, and be accountable for the commitments regulated utilities depend on, join us at LineVision, Built In Boston Best Places to Work !
What will you do?
Core Responsibilities and Key Performance Objectives
  • Lead engineering delivery across Platform, Applications, Embedded Software, Data Science, and Hardware Engineering, with every director and manager in these functions reporting through this role.
  • Drive Nexus Core's ongoing release cadence, across multi-tenant SaaS and on-premise deployments for regulated, international customers.
  • Guide the field-deployed sensor fleet, including health monitoring, lifecycle management, and the next-generation sensor launch, bringing hardware design judgment to component and subsystem trade-offs.
  • Establish delivery standards and a reporting cadence across the org: milestone-level, on track or not, with a named owner for every commitment.
  • Represent engineering to the executive team and partner with Product, Sales, Customer Success, and Finance on delivery commitments, forecasting, and customer escalations.

Within the first 3 months:
  • Develop a working command of Nexus Core's architecture and release history, the sensor fleet's current state, and the org structure across all four functions.
  • Stand up a milestone-level reporting cadence with named owners across Platform, Applications, Data Science, and Hardware/Firmware.
  • Build working relationships with Product, Sales, Customer Success, and Finance leaders on delivery commitments and forecasting.

Within the first 6 months:
  • Run Nexus Core's release cadence against hard external commitments for existing SaaS and on-premise customers.
  • Drive the component and subsystem decisions for the next-generation sensor launch, working closely with the hardware/firmware manager.
  • Next-generation sensor design decisions are locked and moving through execution toward launch

Milestones within the first year:
  • Nexus Core is on a predictable release cadence that consistently meets external commitments across SaaS and on-premise deployments.
  • The org is staffed with strong managers and senior ICs across Platform, Applications, Data Science, and Hardware/Firmware.

How to succeed in this role
Key Competencies
  • Critical Thinking: Diagnose complex delivery, architecture, and hardware trade-offs across software and hardware. Push the organization toward evidence-based decisions over assumptions.
  • Taking Ownership: Own delivery outcomes for Nexus Core and the sensor fleet end to end. Hold every commitment to a named owner and a clear status.
  • Judgment & Decision Making: Weigh risk and opportunity across competing priorities in software and hardware delivery. Make the call, communicate it clearly, and stand behind it.
  • Stakeholder Management: Align Product, Sales, Customer Success, and Finance on delivery commitments and forecasts. Represent engineering credibly to the executive team.

Essential Skills
  • 12+ years in engineering, with several years leading engineering organizations that shipped production software to external customers, preferably in industrial markets.
  • Track record delivering a multi-tenant SaaS platform from architecture through general availability, then running its ongoing release cadence against hard external commitments.
  • Experience running on-premise or privately deployed software for enterprise customers with strict security or compliance requirements.
  • Hands-on hardware design experience for industrial or field-deployed products, including environmental hardening and certifications (UL, CE, FCC, IP-rated enclosures).

What Sets the Best Candidates Apart
  • Startup experience ramping a company from 1-N.
  • NERC CIP or comparable regulated critical-infrastructure experience.
  • Personally built data products or analytics platforms, not just partnered with the team building them.
  • Grid intelligence or dynamic line rating domain experience, or direct hardware/firmware, embedded, or OTA background.

Reporting & Team Structure
  • Reports to the CTO.
  • Lead an organization of 35+ full-time leaders, engineers and contractors, spanning Platform, Applications, and Embedded Software, Data Science, and Hardware Engineering.
  • Collaborates closely with Product, Sales, Customer Success, and Finance.

What does joining LineVision mean for you?
  • Impact. Your talent, time, and energy will critically impact our success in delivering utilities with grid intelligence to enable affordable, reliable power.
  • Ownership. You will hold broad responsibilities with high autonomy and trust in a communicative, collaborative, and fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility. You will be empowered to maintain work-life balance with trust-based PTO.
  • Real World Innovation. You will lead a motivated, high-performing team working with cutting edge, patented technology to help utilities meet the demands of an AI-powered future.
