Job description

Email Marketing Specialist

The Murray Road Agency is seeking an Email Marketing Specialist to serve as the agencyโ€™s subject-matter expert for email and SMS marketing across our growing roster of clients. This individual will own the strategy, planning, execution and optimization of lifecycle marketing efforts, independently evaluating client programs and databases, identifying opportunities and risks, and proactively bringing recommendations to account teams and clients. The Email Marketing Specialist will oversee campaign development from concept to reporting, ensuring brand alignment, healthy and engaged audiences, and measurable business impact.

The ideal candidate has a results-driven mindset and demonstrated experience developing both strategy and execution across CRM and email platforms (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot, or similar). You must be resourceful, proactive, highly organized and comfortable working in a fast-moving agency environment. Weโ€™re looking for someone who can independently assess an email program, identify gaps, establish best practices and translate data into clear strategic recommendations. Experience integrating email and SMS into broader digital, acquisition and retention programs is essential.

This position is based in our Charleston, South Carolina office. A personal passion for (or interest in) the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping or shooting industry is a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Own and develop email and SMS strategies that drive acquisition, engagement, conversion, retention and customer lifetime value.
  • Plan monthly content calendars aligned with brand and campaign objectives.
  • Audit client audiences and develop segmentation strategies based on engagement, lifecycle stage, purchase behavior, customer value, interests and other relevant first- and zero-party data.
  • Manage end-to-end campaign creation, including copywriting, layout, testing and deployment.
  • Audit existing lifecycle programs and identify opportunities for automated journeys, including welcome, nurture, re-engagement, post-purchase, cross-sell, win-back, browse/cart abandonment and other client-relevant flows; own the strategy, business logic, implementation and ongoing optimization of those programs.
  • Collaborate with content, design and account teams to ensure cohesive brand messaging.
  • Stay current on industry and design trends, bringing fresh ideas to the table.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and track deliverables using internal systems.
  • Translate campaign, audience and CRM performance data into proactive strategic recommendations for clients and internal account teams, not simply campaign reporting.
  • Conduct A/B tests for optimization across all facets of email campaigns.
  • Own email database health and deliverability strategy across accounts, including engagement monitoring, suppression and re-engagement strategies, bounce and complaint rates, sender reputation, consent practices, database hygiene and compliance with industry standards and legal requirements (CAN-SPAM, GDPR, etc.).
  • Establish agency best practices and guardrails around when and how inactive, aging or high-risk audiences should be marketed to, and proactively advise teams when a proposed deployment is not recommended.
  • Develop strategies to grow and refresh client databases through owned, paid and partner channels, including lead-generation campaigns, onsite capture, gated content, promotions, referral opportunities and other acquisition tactics.
  • Partner with paid media, social, content, affiliate, ecommerce and account teams to connect email and SMS with broader client objectives, audience acquisition, nurture and retention strategies.
  • Develop and present strategic recommendations to internal teams and clients, clearly articulating the rationale, expected business impact and measurement approach.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in marketing or related field or equivalent professional experience.
  • Three to five (3-5)+ years of hands-on email, CRM or lifecycle marketing experience, with demonstrated responsibility for both strategy and execution; agency or multi-brand experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficient in email and CRM platforms such as Klaviyo, Mailchimp and HubSpot, with the ability to independently evaluate platform capabilities and recommend the right approach for a clientโ€™s needs.
  • Demonstrated experience developing audience segmentation, personalization and lifecycle automation strategies using behavioral, transactional, engagement and lifecycle data.
  • Ability to independently audit email programs and databases, identify strategic gaps and translate data into actionable recommendations for internal teams and clients.
  • Strong understanding of email deliverability, sender reputation, database hygiene, consent management and engagement-based suppression/re-engagement strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience developing strategies for email-list acquisition, lead nurturing and database growth.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating email/CRM strategy into broader digital marketing, customer acquisition and retention programs.
  • Comfort advising account teams and clients when a proposed email approach is not advisable and recommending a stronger alternative.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization and time management skills.
  • Works well independently and as a member of a team.
  • Comfortable working from an existing design or from scratch.
  • Adaptable to changing client needs and receptive to constructive criticism.
  • Experience with project management platforms (Monday.com, Asana, Trello, etc.)
