Common Search IntentElixir Engineer vs Ruby Developer

Elixir Engineers and Ruby Developers often share similar credentials and work environments, but they focus on different programming languages and application types. Elixir Engineers specialize in scalable, real-time systems using Elixir, while Ruby Developers typically work on web applications with Ruby on Rails. Both roles are vital in modern software development, but their industry applications and technical focuses differ.

What is an Elixir Engineer?

An Elixir Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining applications using the Elixir programming language. Elixir is known for its concurrency, scalability, and fault-tolerance, making it a popular choice for real-time web applications, distributed systems, and backend services. Elixir Engineers often work with the Phoenix framework and are responsible for designing, developing, testing, and deploying high-performance applications. They may also optimize existing code, ensure system reliability, and collaborate with teams to implement best practices.

How does an Elixir Engineer typically collaborate with other team members in a software development environment?

As an Elixir Engineer, you will often work closely with backend and frontend developers, DevOps engineers, and product managers to design and deliver scalable applications. Collaboration is usually facilitated through regular stand-up meetings, code reviews, and pair programming sessions, especially when integrating Elixir services with other parts of a system. You may also be responsible for writing technical documentation and assisting in onboarding team members less familiar with Elixir. Open communication and a willingness to share knowledge are key, as Elixir teams often prioritize code quality and functional programming best practices.

How much do elixir developers make?

Elixir developers typically earn between $80,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and skill level. Senior developers with expertise in distributed systems and functional programming can earn higher salaries, especially in tech hubs or companies using Elixir for scalable applications.

Job description

ROLE OVERVIEW
Infinity Home Services is on the forefront of the Home Services industry, with a stated drive to conceive of, develop, and employ cutting edge technology to unlock maximum competitive advantage.
We are hiring a Software Engineer to build and own the next generation of our internal reporting platform. Create and deploy a web application written in Elixir, Phoenix, and PostgreSQL that serves as the single source of truth for our Enterprise Business Intelligence.
This is a hands-on engineering role. You will design and ship features in a Phoenix/LiveView codebase, model and query data in PostgreSQL, and integrate with systems like Zoho, Acculynx, Vena, Acumatica, and various APIs. Report and consult with Executive Leadership Team to turn business questions into reliable, well-built software.
AI is central to how we build at IHS. You will develop primarily through AI tools (Claude, Gemini, OpenAI), deploying frequently and iterating quickly. While AI accelerates delivery, you are the person fully accountable for architecture, validation, and quality.
TECH STACK
  • AI development tools (Claude, Gemini, OpenAI): Primary coding workflow
  • Azure: Primary infrastructure
  • Elixir and Phoenix (including LiveView): Primary application framework
  • JavaScript and C#: For integrations as required
  • PostgreSQL: Primary data store, including complex SQL transformations and modeling

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Own, refine, and maintain the core Elixir/Phoenix application that powers our web-based reporting platform features, APIs, LiveView interfaces, and background jobs.
  • Develop, optimize, and document SQL transformations that standardize, consolidate, and model data from multiple systems.
  • Partner closely with senior leadership to translate business questions into trustworthy reporting and analytical outputs.
  • Build and maintain the core logic that powers our next generation, web based reporting platform.
  • Deliver new reports, dashboards, and data products with consistent definitions, shared metrics, and clear business logic.
  • Manage and improve orchestration, scheduling, and monitoring of data pipelines, extraction processes, and transformation workflows.
  • Strengthen data quality through rigorous validation, testing, documentation, and continuous QA improvements.
  • Optimize SQL code and data models for performance, scalability, and maintainability within a growing analytics ecosystem.
  • Support and contribute to the migration from legacy BI tools toward a modern, flexible reporting environment.
  • Work collaboratively with technical and non technical teams to prioritize requests, troubleshoot issues, and enhance BI delivery processes.
  • Leverage AI tools (e.g., Claude, Gemini, OpenAI) as the primary development workflow, writing, refactoring, and testing code in rapid, iterative cycles.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Professional experience building and shipping web applications in Elixir and Phoenix.
  • Strong PostgreSQL skills, including writing and optimizing complex SQL and designing data models that hold up in production.
  • Experience building or maintaining a reporting application, internal tool, or data product that real users depend on, not just dashboards in a BI tool.
  • Comfort working across the stack: backend logic, data modeling, and enough frontend (LiveView, JavaScript) to ship full features end-to-end.
  • Hands-on experience using AI tools as the primary method of writing, debugging, and refining code and comfortable owning the output and validating accuracy.
  • Strong communication skills, with proven success supporting senior stakeholders and cross-functional partners.
  • A proactive, iterative work style, comfortable deploying frequently, gathering feedback, and improving quickly.
  • Genuine interest in emerging AI capabilities and a desire to apply them to accelerate development.

PREFERRED SKILLSETS
  • Experience with layered analytical architectures (bronze/silver/gold) or similar data modeling patterns.
  • Familiarity with C# or other languages used in legacy integrations.
  • Background in BI, analytics engineering, or data warehousing in addition to software engineering.

BENEFITS
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development tied to your personal interests
  • A transparent, supportive, and collaborative work environment
  • The chance to make a positive impact on our communities and the environment
  • Competitive: Health, dental, and vision coverage; PTO; Paid Holidays; Life Insurance; 401k with match
